  • Leaves: Sorrel-like tang for salads and sautés.
  • Seeds: Nutty, edible when roasted or ground (traditional in West African cuisine).

Culinary Uses:

  • Fresh or dried calyces for hibiscus tea, agua de Jamaica, bissap, sorrel drinks, and holiday punches.
  • Leaves and stems as tangy “greens” for curries, stir-fries, and fresh salads.
  • Used as a natural red food coloring and jam thickener.

Wellness Benefits (overview, not medical advice):

  • Naturally high in anthocyanins and antioxidants.
  • Hibiscus tea has been studied for supporting healthy blood pressure and metabolism.
  • Always consult your healthcare professional before use if pregnant or medicated.

ORIGIN STORY & CULTURAL ROOTS

Roselle’s journey spans continents. Native to Central and West Africa, it spread through ancient trade routes to Asia and the Caribbean, where it became a beloved holiday tradition. In Jamaica, it’s the star of the Christmas Sorrel Drink, steeped with ginger and clove (sometimes with a splash of rum). Across the African diaspora, it connects families and festivities from Senegal’s bissap to Mexico’s agua de Jamaica.

This isn’t just a plant—it’s a story of cultural resilience and shared joy, reborn every season.

🌱 TOP BENEFITS & USES

  • Edible powerhouse for tea, syrup, jam, chutney, and natural dye.
  • High in antioxidants, supporting overall vitality.
  • Beautiful ornamental—burgundy stems, yellow flowers with red throats, jewel-tone calyces.
  • Pollinator-friendly—attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
  • Great educational plant for school gardens and cultural projects.

🪴 BEST PRACTICES FOR PLANTING & CARE

Where to Plant:

Full sun is key. Choose a well-drained sandy or loamy spot with good airflow. Avoid soggy soil.

Planting Tips (High & Tight Method):

  1. Dig a hole only slightly wider than the pot.
  2. Set the plant at or just above soil level—never deep.
  3. Backfill firmly, pressing soil around roots.
  4. Top-dress with compost and trace minerals like azomite.
  5. Mulch around (but not against) the stem to retain moisture.📺 Learn our “High & Tight” Method: GreenDreams YouTube Planting Video

Watering:

💧 Keep evenly moist during establishment. Once rooted, water deeply every 2–3 days during heat. Avoid soggy soil.

Fertilizing:

⚖️ Go easy on nitrogen—too much delays flowering. Use a balanced organic mix once monthly.

Pruning:

✂️ Pinch tips at 12–18” tall to promote branching and heavy flower set. Stop major pruning by mid-summer.

Seasonal Notes (Florida & Similar Climates):

🌞 Start planting after last frost (March–May).

🌸 Flowers appear Sept–Oct as days shorten.

🍷 Harvest calyces Oct–Nov before frost.

❄️ Dies back completely with frost—save seeds for next spring!

🪴 CONTAINER & INDOOR GROWING

  • Grows beautifully in 7–10+ gallon containers.
  • Use organic potting mix with compost and perlite for drainage.
  • Keep outdoors in full sun; not ideal long-term indoors.
  • Can overwinter cuttings in bright indoor light for early start next spring.

🌿 COMPANION & SUPPORT GUILD IDEAS

Pair Roselle with these GreenDreams favorites for a self-sustaining system:

  • Nitrogen Fixers: Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan), Dwarf Powder Puff (Calliandra emarginata)
  • Biomass & Pollinator Boosters: Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), African Blue Basil, Firebush
  • Soil Builders: Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa)

These partners improve soil health, attract pollinators, and reduce fertilizer needs.

⚠️ CAUTIONS

  • Frost-sensitive: Treat as annual outside zones 10–11.
  • Overwatering = root rot 💦.
  • Avoid wet clay soils or poor drainage.
  • Hibiscus tea may interact with medications; consult your doctor if pregnant or nursing.

  • Indoor-only gardeners (needs full sun)

🔍 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

⚠️ Issue 🧠 Cause 🌿 Solution
🌿 Big plant, no flowers 🧠 Too much nitrogen or planted too late 💡 Reduce feeding & plant earlier; blooms on short days
🍂 Yellowing leaves 💦 Overwatering / poor drainage 🌾 Improve aeration; water less frequently
❄️ Frost damage 🌬️ Cold exposure 🪵 Mulch roots, use row cover on cold nights
🍄 Moldy calyces during drying 💧 Low airflow 🌿 Separate seeds promptly, dry smaller batches
🪲 Aphids on leaves 🐜 Ants farming pests 🐞 Blast off with water; encourage ladybugs

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.

✅ CONSENT & AGREEMENT

By completing a purchase, you confirm that you have read, understand, and agree to all shipping policies, responsibilities, and conditions outlined above.

Our goal is transparency, plant health, and long-term growing success — and we appreciate your understanding and care when ordering live plants.
