Transitition to Edibles & Ecological Design
GreenDreams was founded on real landscape construction experience — not theory.
Established as a traditional landscape company in 2000 and evolved into edible and ecological systems in 2011, our work spans backyard gardens, native habitats, food forests, orchards, and full-scale properties across Florida and beyond.
We don’t just design landscapes — we build them, supply them, maintain them, and openly teach the methods behind their success.
Why Most
Edible Landscapes
FAIL in Florida

We routinely step in after projects fail — not because the intent was wrong, but because critical fundamentals were missed.
The most common issues we see:
-
Grass rhizomes overpower cardboard and mulch
Florida turf is aggressive. Without proper removal, it will return quickly.
-
Sod must be mechanically removed
No amount of layering replaces correct site preparation.
-
Soil must be rebuilt in most cases
Florida’s sandy soils do not retain water or nutrients without intentional regeneration.
-
Tree spacing mistakes are permanent
Poor planning leads to overcrowding, disease pressure, and costly removals years later.
-
Poor prep equals expensive failures
Shortcuts always resurface — often after significant investment.
Additional mistakes we commonly correct:
-
Improper plant selection for Florida’s climate
We regularly see northern fruit species planted where they cannot thrive, or sensitive tropicals placed in Zone 9B locations that experience frost every winter — leading to repeated dieback, stunting, or loss.
-
Lack of ecosystem thinking
Bare soil invites weeds. Successful systems rely on layered plantings that occupy space, build biomass, and suppress unwanted regrowth naturally.
-
Insufficient plant knowledge
Many designers rely on limited palettes. GreenDreams maintains a living nursery collection of over 200 plant types and hundreds of cultivars, allowing us to match species correctly to site, climate, and function.
-
Ignoring long-term soil regeneration
Our installations focus on rebuilding soil structure using heavy mulching, organic matter, biochar, and non-toxic amendments that improve water retention and biological activity.
-
Overreliance on water and inputs
We design irrigation systems and planting layouts that reduce long-term dependence on water and external resources, rather than increasing it.
While we openly share education through our YouTube channel and social platforms, personalized guidance is where mistakes are prevented before they happen. Our on-site consultations allow us to tailor proven systems to your specific property, conditions, and goals — something no generic plan or online advice can replace
Done correctly, edible and ecological landscapes don’t just survive in Florida — they regenerate the land, reduce maintenance, and improve over time.
Where Many Landscape Designers Fall Short —

Small crews with hand tools only
-
Design often disconnected from long-term performance

-
Costs are clear before scheduling — not after
Most importantly, it allows us to offer direct access to senior-level expertise, not delegated staff or junior designers.
GreenDreams is headquartered in Spring Hill, Florida (Pasco County).
Our consultation pricing is structured as a flat rate based on distance from our home base, not an hourly meter that keeps running.
This reflects the reality that your consultation is conducted by Pete Kanaris — owner, founder, and chief of operations — and pricing accounts for his time away from daily operations, travel requirements, and logistical costs.
Each rate covers:
-
Pete’s travel time
-
Fuel and vehicle costs
-
Time spent onsite
-
When applicable, travel days and accommodations for outer regions
This allows us to be transparent and predictable with pricing — no surprises, no ticking clock.
