Jaboticaba Tree Grape - Yellow (Myrciaria glazioviana 'Cabeluda') 1G
๐ Yellow Jaboticaba (Myrciaria glazioviana โCabeludaโ) โ 1-Gallon Tropical Fruit Tree ๐ฟ
Golden fruit โข low acidity โข fuzzy leaves โข true Atlantic Forest species
The Yellow Jaboticaba, botanically known as Myrciaria glazioviana and commonly called Cabeluda (โthe hairy oneโ), is one of the most botanically distinct, visually identifiable, and gentle-flavored jaboticabas available to collectors today.
Unlike purple jaboticabas in the Plinia genus, Yellow Jaboticaba belongs to Myrciaria, a closely related but distinct group with different foliage texture, fruit chemistry, and growth behavior. Its golden-yellow fruit, low acidity, and soft, fuzzy leaf undersides set it apart immediatelyโeven before fruiting.
Native to Brazilโs humid Atlantic Forest, this rare species produces candy-sweet fruit with notes of apricot, mango, and honey, balanced by refreshing juiciness and minimal tannin. Slow-growing yet resilient, it forms a sculptural canopy and classic cauliflorous fruiting habit, turning the trunk into a living work of art.
This 1-gallon plant (~2โ3 years old) is an ideal starting size for growers who appreciate beauty, patience, and long-term tropical rewards.

๐ฟ What Sets Yellow Jaboticaba Apart (Before Fruiting)
Many shoppers ask โHow is this different from other jaboticabas?โ Hereโs what makes Yellow Jaboticaba unique:
- ๐ Golden yellow fruit instead of purple
- ๐ฏ Lower acidity and tannin โ smoother, kid-friendly sweetness
- ๐ Fuzzy leaf undersides (rare and reliable ID trait)
- ๐ฟ Different genus (Myrciaria, not Plinia)
- ๐ณ Highly ornamental foliage and trunk form
- ๐ชด Excellent container performance with consistent moisture
This cultivar is often chosen by:
- Families wanting gentler fruit flavor
- Collectors seeking clear identification before fruiting
- Growers who value ornamental structure as much as harvest
๐ Fruit, Flavor & Fruiting Habits
Fruit Appearance
- Ripe fruit turns golden yellow
- Slight fuzz on the skin (origin of the name Cabeluda)
- Forms directly on the trunk and mature branches
Flavor Profile
- Candy-sweet, low-acid flavor
- Apricot, mango, and honey notes
- Smooth, refreshing finish with minimal bite
Fruiting Timeline (Honest Expectations)
From a 1-gallon plant, expect:
- ~3โ5 years to consistent fruiting under ideal care
We intentionally overestimate timelines so expectations remain realistic and success feels rewarding.
Fruiting Season (Florida & Similar Climates)
- Typically 1โ3 crops per year once mature
- Late springโsummer peaks
- Occasional off-season fruiting in mild winters with steady moisture
๐ Leaf Identification โ Can You Spot It Without Fruit?
Yes โ Yellow Jaboticaba is one of the easiest jaboticabas to identify by foliage alone.
Leaf Traits
- Medium-large leaves
- Glossy upper surface
- Soft, fuzzy undersides (distinctive)
- New growth often emerges bronze-green before maturing
These fuzzy undersides:
- Reduce water loss
- Reflect its Atlantic Forest origin
- Provide a reliable identification marker even before fruiting
๐ชด Why GreenDreams Recommends Container Culture
At GreenDreams, we grow nearly all jaboticabas in containers โ including Yellow Jaboticaba โ because container culture consistently outperforms in-ground planting, especially in Floridaโs alkaline or variable soils.
Container culture allows
- Precise control of acidic pH (5.5โ6.5)
- Superior root oxygenation
- Support for heavy, frequent watering
- Easier cold protection and mobility
- Reduced micronutrient lockout over time
๐ฑ Our Proven 50/50 Growing Medium (Nursery Standard)
Yellow Jaboticaba roots require moisture and oxygen.
Recommended mix
- 50% peat moss or coconut coir
- 50% perlite or fine pine bark
Optional (small amounts): compost, worm castings, biochar
๐ซ Avoid sand, clay, or dense garden soil in containers.
๐ง Watering โ The #1 Key to Success
Yellow Jaboticaba is a heavy water user.
- Containers: Daily watering during warm months
- In-ground: Drip irrigation only (never overhead sprays)
- Soil must remain evenly moist
- Never allow the root zone to dry completely
Consistent moisture directly influences:
- Leaf health
- Growth rate
- Flower initiation
- Fruit quality
โ๏ธ Light & Placement (Standardized)
๐ค Plants up to ~30-Gallon Size
- Filtered or bright partial light strongly preferred
- Avoid direct afternoon sun
- Ideal placements:
- Screened patios & lanais
- Under high, open canopy trees
- Greenhouse edges
- Bright indoor sunrooms
๐ณ Very Large Trees (30G+)
- Can tolerate more sun only with constant moisture
- Filtered light still produces superior foliage long-term
Pruning โ Minimal Only
Yellow Jaboticaba does not tolerate hard pruning.
- Remove only dead or crossing branches
- Avoid cutting back healthy wood
- Fruit forms on older wood
- Allow natural canopy development
๐ชด Transplanting & Container Step-Up (Critical)
โก๏ธ Wait at least 30 days OR until new growth appears (whichever comes later) before transplanting.
This ensures shipping stress has passed and roots are actively growing.
Step-Up Plan
1G โ 3G โ 7G โ 15โ30G
How to Transplant
- Keep root ball intact
- Plant at the same depth (root flare just above soil line)
- Pack soil firmly
- Return to filtered light during recovery
๐พ Seasonal Habits (Florida & Similar Climates)
- Evergreen year-round
- 3โ5 growth flushes annually
- New leaves soft and bronze, maturing green with fuzzy undersides
- No true dormancy in mild winters โ growth simply slows
๐ Troubleshooting Guide
Yellow leaves โ pH too high โ Acidic mix + chelated iron
Leaf scorch โ Excess sun / low humidity โ Increase shade, mist foliage
Slow growth โ Normal jaboticaba pace โ Maintain warmth & moisture
Root rot โ Dense soil โ Repot into airy 50/50 mix

๐ LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS
Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.
Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.
If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.
โฑ๏ธ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS
All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.
๐ฆ Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.
๐ Typical Transit Times:
-
Florida: 1–2 days
-
Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days
-
Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days
Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.
Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.
๐ก๏ธ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK
Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.
We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.
Customers are responsible for:
-
Monitoring tracking information sent via email

Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery
-
Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions
During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.
โ ๏ธ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY
By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.
Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:
-
Weather-related damage
-
Carrier delays
-
Poor plant selection for a given climate or region
