🍇 Scarlet Jaboticaba Tree (Plinia sp. ‘Escarlate’) — 1-Gallon Tropical Fruit Tree 🌿

The fastest-fruiting jaboticaba in our collection — grown with patience, rewarded sooner

Among all the jaboticabas we grow, Scarlet (‘Escarlate’) stands out as the earliest to fruit. It’s the cultivar we recommend for growers who want the iconic trunk-fruiting jaboticaba experience without waiting decades—while still honoring the slow, deliberate nature of these remarkable trees.

Our 1-gallon Scarlet Jaboticaba is a healthy, 2–3-year-old juvenile that has moved beyond the fragile seedling stage and is ready for steady, consistent growth. Compact now, it will gradually develop into a medium-sized tropical fruit tree with glossy foliage, smooth bark, and sweet, grape-like fruit borne directly on its trunk.

🍈 Fruit & Fruiting Characteristics

  • Flavor profile: Sweet, rich, and tropical — often compared to muscadine grape with a hint of lychee
  • Texture: Juicy, translucent pulp wrapped in a thin, tender purple skin
  • Display: Dense clusters of fruit form directly on the trunk and older branches, creating a living sculpture
  • Seasonality (Florida): Multiple flushes per year in warm, humid conditions, often peaking spring through summer

⏳ Fruiting Timeline (Realistic Expectations)

Scarlet is the fastest-fruiting jaboticaba we grow, but it is still a jaboticaba.

From a 1-gallon plant, plan approximately:

  • ~2–4 years before flowering and fruiting under excellent care

We intentionally set conservative timelines so expectations are realistic and results feel like a win.

🌱 GreenDreams Growing Experience (Why Scarlet Is Different)

After years of side-by-side comparison, Scarlet consistently outpaces other jaboticabas in:

  • Trunk thickening
  • Canopy development
  • Early formation of fruiting wood

While still slow by conventional standards, Scarlet rewards consistency sooner than Sabará, Grimal, or many collector cultivars.

🪴 Why We Recommend Containers (Strongly)

Although jaboticabas can grow in the ground, containers consistently outperform in Florida and similar climates.

Container culture allows:

  • Full control of acidic pH (5.5–6.5)
  • Excellent root oxygenation
  • Heavy, frequent watering without waterlogging
  • Easier cold and weather protection
  • Reduced micronutrient lockout

In our experience, container-grown jaboticabas often grow healthier and fruit more reliably than in-ground trees.

🌾 Our Proven Growing Method (50/50 Rule)

Preferred Growing Medium:

  • 50% peat moss or coconut coir
  • 50% perlite or fine pine bark

This mix is:

  • Acidic
  • Highly aerated
  • Moisture-stable

🚫 Avoid sand, clay, or heavy garden soil in containers — jaboticaba roots suffocate easily in compacted media.

💧 Watering Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

Scarlet Jaboticaba is a heavy water user.

  • Containers: Daily watering is ideal during warm weather
  • Soil: Must remain evenly moist at all times — never bone dry
  • Best method: Drip irrigation or soil-level watering
  • Mulch: 2–3″ of pine bark or wood chips to stabilize moisture

Consistent moisture is the single biggest factor for:

  • Healthy growth
  • Faster maturity
  • Earlier and repeat flowering

☀️ Light & Placement (Standardized)

🌤 For Plants Up to 30-Gallon Size

  • Filtered or dappled light is strongly preferred
  • Avoid direct afternoon sun
  • Ideal locations:
    • Shaded patios
    • Screened enclosures
    • Under high, open canopy trees
    • Greenhouses

Direct sun at this stage commonly causes:

  • Leaf scorch
  • Yellowing
  • Growth stalling

🌳 For Very Large, Fully Established Trees (30G+)

  • Scarlet can tolerate more sun once fully established with consistent moisture
  • Even then, filtered light often produces healthier foliage and more reliable fruiting
  • Any increase in sun exposure should be gradual over months

Pruning

Although we heavily prune many fruit trees, jaboticabas are an exception.

Scarlet Jaboticaba does not respond well to hard pruning.

Why Heavy Pruning Causes Problems

  • Jaboticabas prefer to refill on existing branches
  • Hard pruning triggers a stress flush of tender new growth
  • That new growth is extremely sun-sensitive
  • Combined with direct or near-full sun, this often leads to:
    • Yellowing
    • Leaf burn
    • Growth shutdown

What We Recommend Instead

  • Remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches
  • Avoid cutting back healthy wood
  • Allow time, moisture, and filtered light to let the canopy naturally fill in

This results in:

  • Healthier foliage
  • Stronger trunk development
  • Earlier, more reliable fruiting

🪴 Container Step-Up & Transplanting

Step-Up Plan

1G → 3G → 7G → 15–30G (larger sizes for local pickup only)

When to Transplant

Do not rush transplanting.

Most 1-gallon Scarlet Jaboticabas:

  • Can remain in their pot 6–12 months
  • Prefer staying slightly snug

Transplant when you see:

  • Roots circling the bottom
  • Water running straight through
  • Drying too quickly between waterings

How to Transplant

  • Do not disturb the root ball
  • Plant at the same depth (root flare just above soil line)
  • Pack soil firmly
  • Return to filtered light while recovering

Seasonal Habits (Florida & Similar Climates)

  • Evergreen in Florida
  • New growth flushes bronze, then matures glossy green
  • Brief leaf drop may occur after cold or drought stress
  • Once mature, may flower and fruit multiple times per year following rain or irrigation flushes

Troubleshooting (Quick Reference)

1️⃣ Yellow Leaves → High pH or sun stress → Acidic mix + filtered light

2️⃣ Leaf Burn / Curl → Too much sun or drought → Increase shade + moisture

3️⃣ Slow Growth → Normal at this age → Consistency + patience

4️⃣ Root Rot → Poor drainage → Airy media + drainage holes

5️⃣ Leaf Drop → Shipping or cold stress → New growth follows in weeks

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.
