🌤️🌬️ Best Location & Exposure (Critical for Success)
Sri Kembangan follows the same placement rules as all Carambola — and thrives when those rules are respected.
Ideal placement includes:
- Beneath hardwood canopies (oak is ideal)
- Bright, dappled light conditions
- Courtyards, garden rooms, and side yards
- Next to structures (homes, fences, walls)
- Areas protected from prevailing winds
🌬️ Wind protection is essential.
Unprotected wind causes leaf damage, flower drop, and reduced fruit quality.
🚫 Open, exposed, full-sun locations often result in stress, leaf burn, and poor fruiting.
Origin Story & Cultivar Background
The Sri Kembangan cultivar originates from Malaysia, where it was selected and propagated specifically for its exceptional sweetness and low acidity. Over time, it became one of the most sought-after starfruit varieties for fresh consumption throughout Southeast Asia and later in Florida and other subtropical regions.
Traditionally, starfruit trees were planted near homes and within mixed tropical gardens — benefiting from partial shade, calm air, and consistent moisture.
Culinary, Cultural & Nutritional Uses
Best uses include:
- Fresh eating (fully ripe fruit is very sweet)
- Fruit platters and salads
- Salsas, chutnies & salads
- Juices and smoothies
- Light desserts and garnishes
Nutritional highlights:
- High vitamin C
- Fiber-rich

⚠️ As with all starfruit, individuals with kidney conditions should consult medical guidance before consumption.
🌳 Ornamental & Landscape Value

🪴 Container, Patio & Indoor Growing
- Performs very well in containers
- Start in 5–7 gallon pots
- Gradually up-pot to 15–25 gallons
- Requires consistent watering
- Rolling caddies help fine-tune placement
Indoor growing is possible short-term with bright, indirect light but performs best outdoors in protected conditions.

- Light pruning after harvest
- Remove crossing or wind-damaged branches
- Maintain airflow without overexposing canopy
Cold Tolerance & Recovery

- Leaf drop typically occurs around 28–30°F
- Defoliation is normal and temporary
Graft recovery rule:
After cold damage, regrowth must occur above the graft union to retain the Sri Kembangan variety. Remove any growth below the graft.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS
Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.
Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.
If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.
⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS
All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days
-
Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days
