Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa) 4"
🌸 Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa) – Florida’s Living Green Carpet & Sensitive Plant 🌿
Looking for a groundcover that’s beautiful, drought-tough, pollinator-friendly and interactive? Meet Sunshine Mimosa — one of Florida’s most fascinating native plants. This fast-spreading perennial creates a lush green carpet topped with bright pink powder-puff flowers, while its delicate fern-like leaves respond to touch by folding inward.
That unique “sensitive plant” behavior makes Sunshine Mimosa a favorite for sensory gardens, edible landscapes, schools, children’s gardens, and pollinator spaces where people can engage directly with nature. Add in its powerful nitrogen-fixing ability, drought resistance, and ability to thrive in poor sandy soils, and you’ve got one of the most useful living groundcovers for Florida and beyond.

🌸 A Groundcover That Moves! – The “Sensitive Plant” Effect 🌿
One of the coolest features of Sunshine Mimosa is its ability to respond to touch. When brushed, stepped on lightly, or stimulated, the tiny leaflets temporarily fold inward before reopening again later.
This natural defense mechanism helps protect the plant from grazing animals and excessive moisture loss in the wild — but in the garden, it creates an unforgettable interactive experience.
🌿 Perfect for:
- Sensory gardens
- Children’s educational gardens
- Pollinator pathways
- Interactive botanical displays
- School gardens & nature centers
- Therapeutic landscapes
Kids especially love watching the foliage react in real time — making Sunshine Mimosa one of the most memorable native plants you can grow.
🌱 Why Grow Sunshine Mimosa?
💚 Nature’s Living Fertilizer
Sunshine Mimosa is part of the legume family, meaning it naturally improves the soil through a process called nitrogen fixation.
Tiny beneficial bacteria called rhizobia live inside nodules attached to the plant’s roots. These bacteria capture nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and convert it into a usable nutrient form that plants can absorb.
🌿 What Does This Mean for Growers?
- Lower fertilizer costs
- Reduced synthetic inputs
- Healthier soil biology
- Improved surrounding plant growth
- Better moisture retention over time
- Increased microbial diversity
As the plant sheds leaves, roots, and organic matter, those nutrients slowly cycle back into the surrounding soil — feeding nearby fruit trees, herbs, ornamentals, and pollinator plants naturally.
💡 Do you have to “activate” the nitrogen?
No special treatment is required. Simply plant Sunshine Mimosa into living soil and avoid excessive synthetic fertilizers, which can suppress the rhizobia relationship. The plant and bacteria handle the rest naturally.

🌾 Thrives Where Turf Grass Struggles
One of Sunshine Mimosa’s biggest advantages is its ability to thrive in:
✅ Dry sandy soils
✅ Low fertility ground
✅ Harsh sun exposure
✅ Native Florida conditions
✅ Difficult roadside or slope areas
✅ Areas with minimal irrigation
Unlike turf grass that often requires constant fertilizing, mowing, irrigation, and weed control, Sunshine Mimosa settles into difficult areas and gradually improves them over time.
At our own GreenDreams Farm, we’ve watched Sunshine Mimosa naturally fill dry native sands where traditional turf struggles to survive — even with minimal inputs once established.
🌾 Sunshine Mimosa vs. Perennial Peanut – Florida’s Dynamic Living Mulch Duo 🌸🌾
At GreenDreams, we often combine Sunshine Mimosa with Perennial Peanut (Arachis glabrata) in food forest and regenerative landscape projects because the two plants complement each other beautifully.
Both are nitrogen-fixing legumes. Both thrive in full sun to filtered light. But each has slightly different soil preferences — allowing them to naturally occupy different ecological niches.
🌸 Sunshine Mimosa
- Prefers lean, sandy native soils
- Excellent in dry orchard edges and pathways
- Thrives in lower fertility zones
- More drought tolerant overall
🌾 Perennial Peanut
- Performs best in richer mulched beds
- Appreciates decomposed organic matter & humus
- Excellent beneath fruit trees and irrigated zones
- Forms dense green mulch in amended soils
At our farm, Sunshine Mimosa tends to dominate the dry native zones between orchard rows, while Perennial Peanut thrives beneath fruit trees where hardwood mulch, compost, biochar, and organic matter have accumulated.
Together they create a highly functional living mulch system that:
🌿 Builds soil fertility
🌿 Suppresses weeds
🌿 Reduces irrigation needs
🌿 Supports pollinators
🌿 Prevents erosion
🌿 Reduces fertilizer inputs
🌿 Increases biodiversity

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.
Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.
If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.
⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS
All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.
