🌿 Longevity Spinach (Gynura procumbens) — Crisp, Nutrient-Dense, and Florida-Friendly! 🌞

A Powerhouse Leafy Green for Gardens That Sizzle 🔥

When cool-season spinach quits in summer, Longevity Spinach (Gynura procumbens) keeps right on giving. This low, spreading edible is prized across tropical Asia for its mild flavor, tender crunch, and traditional wellness uses. In Florida and similar climates, it’s an easy, nearly year-round cut-and-come-again green for beds, borders, and containers.

🌿 Quick Facts Table

  • Botanical Name: Gynura procumbens
  • Plant Type: Perennial edible groundcover (annual in colder zones)
  • Sale Size: Ships in a 4" pot (economy starter)
  • Mature Height & Width: 6–12 in tall, spreading 24–36 in (pruned to shape)
  • USDA Zones: 9–11 perennial; grow as warm-season annual or overwinter indoors in colder zones
  • Sun Requirements: Partial shade to bright filtered sun; tolerates full sun with irrigation
  • Cold Hardiness: Frost-tender; protect below ~32–40°F
  • Growth Habit: Spreading, semi-succulent perennial; fast root from cuttings
  • Spacing: 18–24 in between plants (room for mats to fill)

🥗 Flavor & Edible Use

  • Taste & Texture: Mild, clean flavor often compared to fresh green beans; leaves are crisp when raw.
  • Raw: Excellent in salads, smoothies, wraps.
  • Cooked: Holds texture in stir-fries, soups, and curries; develops a slight silkiness when braised.
  • Cultural Use: Widely eaten across Southeast Asia; served raw with rice (ulam) or quickly sautéed in aromatic oils.

🌱 Top Benefits & Uses

  • Summer Workhorse: Keeps producing through Florida heat & humidity when other greens bolt.
  • Cut-and-Come-Again: Frequent harvesting encourages bushy growth.
  • Edible + Ornamental: Glossy green leaves make a lush edible groundcover or container spiller.
  • Traditional Wellness Plant: Studied for its antioxidant, glycemic, and anti-inflammatory potential.
  • Eco-Friendly: Requires minimal inputs and thrives under organic conditions.

🌾 Best Practices for Planting & Care

  • Where to Plant: Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal; well-draining, compost-rich soil.
  • Planting Method: Use GreenDreams’ “High & Tight” planting technique — plant slightly above grade for airflow and drainage.
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist during establishment; reduce frequency once rooted.
  • Mulching: Apply hardwood mulch 2–3" deep, keeping it a few inches away from stems.
  • Feeding: Monthly light top-dress with compost or slow-release organic fertilizer.
  • Pruning/Harvesting: Pinch tips weekly to promote branching; harvest outer leaves regularly.
  • Winter (FL 8b–9a edges): Protect from frost with row cover; take cuttings before cold snaps to ensure next season’s crop.

🪴 Container & Indoor Growing

  • Container Sizes: Start in 1–3 gal, upgrade to 5 gal for mature growth.
  • Support/Shape: Let it trail naturally or trim for a tidy mound.
  • Indoor Overwintering (Zones 5–8): Provide bright light or grow lamps; water sparingly; pinch often to prevent legginess.

🌼 Companions & Landscape Design

  • Edible Guild Partners:
    • Nitrogen/biomass: Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), Pigeon Pea, Everglades Tomato
    • Pollinators: Blue Porterweed, African Blue Basil, Firebush
  • Aesthetic Companions: Okinawan Spinach, Variegated Cuban Oregano, Spiral Ginger
  • Design Tip: Use as a living groundcover beneath taller fruit trees or along sunny pathways.

🌿 Wellness Notes & Cautions (Informational only — not medical advice)

  • Traditional Use: Valued across Southeast Asia for supporting healthy blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation balance.
  • Scientific Findings: Early research suggests potential antioxidant and metabolic benefits; human studies remain limited.
  • Safety: Because extracts may influence glucose and blood pressure, consult a medical professional if you take related medications. Avoid during pregnancy or lactation unless approved.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.
