๐ŸŒฑ Top Benefits & Uses

๐ŸŒฟ Sustainable Lawn Alternative

A living lawn that needs little water, zero fertilizer, and no pesticides.

๐Ÿƒ Soil Enrichment

As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it naturally improves soil fertility.

๐Ÿ’ง Drought & Heat Tolerant

Once rooted, it thrives even in Floridaโ€™s sunniest and driest conditions.

๐ŸŒบ Long-Blooming & Ornamental

Produces continuous orange-tinted blossoms from spring through fall.

๐Ÿ Pollinator Magnet

Supports native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

๐ŸŒพ Erosion Control

Dense rhizomes hold sandy or sloped soil in place โ€” a favorite for eco-landscapes.

๐ŸŒž Where to Plant

Choose a sunny, well-drained site โ€” sandy or loamy soils are ideal. Avoid compacted or soggy ground.

Perfect for:

  • Low-maintenance lawns & garden borders
  • Between fruit trees in food forests or orchards
  • Coastal and roadside plantings
  • Slopes, berms, or naturalized garden zones

๐ŸŒฑ How to Plant (High & Tight Method)

  1. Dig a hole only slightly wider than the pot and no deeper than the rootball.
  2. Position crown level with or slightly above soil line.
  3. Backfill with native soil mixed with compost; gently firm in place.
  4. Water deeply to settle soil.
  5. Apply mulch around base (avoid piling on stems).
  6. Space 12โ€“18 inches apart for full coverage within a year.

For step-by-step technique, check out the GreenDreams โ€œHigh & Tightโ€ planting video on YouTube.

๐Ÿ’ง Watering

Water daily for the first week, then every 2โ€“3 days until established. Once rooted, the plant is extremely drought-tolerant and resilient.

โœ‚๏ธ Mowing & Maintenance

  • Optional mowing encourages tighter, fuller growth and abundant blooms.
  • Mow every 3โ€“6 weeks depending on appearance goals.
  • Light mowing also stimulates nitrogen cycling and new shoots.

๐ŸŒธ Edible & Ecological Notes

  • Flowers are edible with a fresh, green-peanut flavor โ€” a fun garnish for salads or desserts.
  • Use caution when harvesting from areas that may have been exposed to chemicals, fertilizers, or pets.
  • Always harvest from clean, organically maintained landscapes.
  • Blooms attract pollinators and beneficial insects that support your gardenโ€™s ecosystem.

๐ŸŒฟ Seasonal Behavior

In cooler regions (Zones 8bโ€“9a), foliage may die back after frost but resprouts from rhizomes each spring. In warmer areas, it can remain semi-evergreen and bloom nearly year-round.

๐Ÿชด Container & Patio Use

Perfect as a spillover or living mulch in raised beds and planters. Combine with citrus, bananas, or herbs for a lush tropical look. Needs full sun and moderate watering until well rooted.

โš ๏ธ Cautions

  • Not suited for heavy foot traffic areas. Use stepping stones where needed.
  • Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained sites.
  • Foliage may burn with frost but recovers in warm weather.

Troubleshooting Guide

Problem Cause & Solution
Slow to fill in Normal for young 4โ€ starters; ensure full sun and consistent watering.
Yellowing foliage Often from overwatering or poor drainage; adjust irrigation and add compost.
Lack of blooms Insufficient sunlight or excessive mowing โ€” increase sun exposure.
Winter dieback Normal; rhizomes survive underground and regrow in spring warmth.

โ“ FAQ

Can it replace grass?

Yes โ€” for light-traffic lawns or eco-landscapes. Itโ€™s mowable and forms a dense, green carpet.

Is it invasive?

No. It spreads slowly and controllably through rhizomes.

Do I need to fertilize?

No nitrogen fertilizer needed โ€” it produces its own through root nodules.

Is it edible?

Yes! The flowers are edible and taste like green peanuts, but only harvest from chemical-free, pet-free areas.

How long before full coverage?

In warm weather with consistent watering, expect full coverage within 6โ€“12 months.

๐ŸŒŸ Is This Plant Right for You?

โœ… Best For:

Florida gardeners, orchard owners, permaculture projects, and anyone wanting a colorful, low-maintenance groundcover.

โŒ Not Ideal For:

Deep shade, compacted clay, high-traffic lawns, or poorly drained soils.

1. Shipping Stress: Transportation can be stressful for plants, particularly when they spend several days in a confined, dark environment. It’s common for plants to experience leaf drop during this period. Rest assured, most plants typically recover quickly and thrive with minimal aftercare. However, some may need extra attention, love, and care, requiring appropriate watering and exposure to gentle light post-unboxing.

2. Potential Physical Damage: Despite our dedicated efforts to ensure that your plants are securely packaged, they may incur damage during shipping and handling by UPS. Rest assured, our shipping team is committed to packing your selections with utmost care and precision to minimize any potential harm.

  • For significant box damage, please reach out to UPS within 30 days to initiate a claim.

  • For minor damages, such as a broken branch or stem, we advise allowing the plant time to recover and regenerate with proper care and attention.

3. Long-Distance Shipping Considerations: Orders shipped over long distances, particularly to the western US, may take 3 - 5 business days to arrive due to various factors, including agricultural inspections in Arizona, California, and Texas. Such extended transit times can be particularly challenging for tender, young plants, affecting their quality due to prolonged confinement.

  • We take additional measures during packaging to facilitate a swift recovery of the plants upon unboxing.

  • Initial extra care and attention might be required over the first few weeks post-transport.

For further guidance, kindly review our detailed policies on returns and refunds, as well as our comprehensive plant care guide. We appreciate your understanding and patience in nurturing your new plants.
