🌿 ‘Orange’ Perennial Peanut (Arachis glabrata) — Florida’s Low-Water, Living-Mulch Lawn Alternative 🌞

Swap thirsty turf for a blooming, nitrogen-fixing groundcover that thrives in heat, shrugs off drought once established, feeds your soil, and lights up the landscape with golden-orange blooms. Shipped in a robust 1-gallon container (4" starter occasionally available).

Why Growers Love It 🌼

  • Flowers you can eat with a light, peanut-like flavor.
  • Best in full sun, tolerates light shade; mowing boosts bloom.
  • Spaces 12–18 in. to fill in quickly as a soft, mowable carpet.
  • Fixes its own nitrogen—low fertilizer needs.
  • Drought & salt tolerant once established; handles light foot traffic.
  • Top-kills in frost then regrows from rhizomes in warm weather (Zones 8b–11).

  • Soil builder: Fixes nitrogen naturally, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter.
  • Drought & salt tolerance: Excellent for Florida coasts and medians after establishment.
  • Erosion control: Rhizomes knit soil on slopes and berms—great as living mulch in orchards.
  • Ornamental pop: Continuous warm-season blooms; pairs beautifully with grasses and flowering natives.

  • Fruit trees (Mulberry - Fig - Starfruit) — living mulch between trees.
  • Sunshine Mimosa — alternate swaths for pollinators and contrast.
  • Muhly Grass, Vetiver, Firebush, Blue Porterweed, Mexican Sunflower — layered bloom and biomass support around paths and borders.

🌱 Best Practices for Planting & Care (Florida-Focused)

Where to Plant

Choose full sun and well-drained soil (pH 5.0–6.5). Avoid constantly wet sites. Perfect for berms, medians, orchard rows, and low-traffic lawns.

How to Plant (“High & Tight” Method)

  1. Dig a hole no deeper than the pot and slightly wider.
  2. Set the crown level or slightly above the soil surface.
  3. Backfill firmly with native soil mixed with compost.
  4. Water well to settle soil, and apply mulch—keeping it off the base.
  5. Space 12–18 inches apart for quick coverage.

For full instructions, watch the GreenDreams “High & Tight” planting video on YouTube.

Watering

Keep evenly moist during establishment; once roots are set, reduce watering. Drought-tolerant afterward.

Mowing

Mowing is optional, but an occasional trim encourages dense growth and more blooms. Maintain a low height if you prefer a lawn-like appearance.

Feeding

As a legume, no nitrogen fertilizer is required. Top-dress with compost or mineral amendments for soil balance.

Winter Notes

Expect top dieback after frost in North and Central Florida. Rhizomes overwinter and re-leaf in spring. In South Florida, growth slows but remains evergreen.

🪴 Container & Patio Uses

Grow in wide, shallow planters as a spillover living mulch beneath dwarf citrus or ornamental trees. Needs full sun to flower well. Water sparingly once established.

⚠️ Cautions

  • Foot traffic: Handles only light traffic. Use stepping stones for frequent paths.
  • Cold: Foliage burns in frost; rhizomes survive and regrow in spring.
  • Spread: Can expand vigorously in ideal conditions—edge beds to contain growth.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely Cause & Fix
Slow fill-in or weeds Normal early on. Weed regularly and keep consistent watering first season.
Few flowers Increase sun exposure or lightly mow to refresh growth.
Yellowing leaves Check drainage; usually not nitrogen-related. Add compost and minerals.
Winter dieback Natural response to frost. Regrowth will appear in spring.
Poor drainage Improve soil aeration or adjust irrigation.

❓ FAQ

Can it replace my lawn?

Yes, in light-traffic areas. Mow occasionally and use stepping stones for footpaths.

Do I need to fertilize it?

No nitrogen fertilizer needed—it fixes its own. Compost and minerals are beneficial.

How far apart do I plant?

12–18 inches apart for even coverage.

Is it edible?

Yes—flowers are edible with a mild peanut flavor.

What happens in winter?

Frost may burn the foliage, but it regrows vigorously in spring from underground rhizomes.

1. Shipping Stress: Transportation can be stressful for plants, particularly when they spend several days in a confined, dark environment. It’s common for plants to experience leaf drop during this period. Rest assured, most plants typically recover quickly and thrive with minimal aftercare. However, some may need extra attention, love, and care, requiring appropriate watering and exposure to gentle light post-unboxing.

2. Potential Physical Damage: Despite our dedicated efforts to ensure that your plants are securely packaged, they may incur damage during shipping and handling by UPS. Rest assured, our shipping team is committed to packing your selections with utmost care and precision to minimize any potential harm.

  • For significant box damage, please reach out to UPS within 30 days to initiate a claim.

  • For minor damages, such as a broken branch or stem, we advise allowing the plant time to recover and regenerate with proper care and attention.

3. Long-Distance Shipping Considerations: Orders shipped over long distances, particularly to the western US, may take 3 - 5 business days to arrive due to various factors, including agricultural inspections in Arizona, California, and Texas. Such extended transit times can be particularly challenging for tender, young plants, affecting their quality due to prolonged confinement.

  • We take additional measures during packaging to facilitate a swift recovery of the plants upon unboxing.

  • Initial extra care and attention might be required over the first few weeks post-transport.

For further guidance, kindly review our detailed policies on returns and refunds, as well as our comprehensive plant care guide. We appreciate your understanding and patience in nurturing your new plants.
