  • Flavor profile: Buttery, mild, and fruity with low bitterness — classic Arbequina oil style.
  • Fruit color: Green to purple-black when fully ripe.
  • Harvest window: Fall (Oct–Nov) in Mediterranean/California-like climates; varies with region.
  • Florida fruiting habits: Spring blooms lead to occasional fruiting, depending on climate and conditions.

When to expect fruit:

Arbequina trees grown from this 1-gallon size typically begin to fruit within 3–4 years, once established in-ground or upsized to a larger pot.

🌱 TOP BENEFITS & USES

  • Edible & ornamental: Compact stature, silvery foliage, and a sculptural trunk — stunning in containers or landscapes.
  • Drought-tolerant: Once established, thrives with minimal watering.
  • Culinary value: Fruit suitable for home curing or mild oil pressing; leaves used traditionally in teas.
  • Cultural roots: Named for Arbeca, Catalonia, Spain — beloved across the Mediterranean for its flavor and adaptability.

🪴 CONTAINER & INDOOR NOTES

  • Container-friendly: This smaller 1-gallon size is excellent for patio, balcony, or courtyard growing. Repot into a 3–5 gallon container within the first year for best development.
  • Light: Keep in full sun outdoors, or indoors near a bright south-facing window with supplemental grow light if needed.
  • Watering: Allow top inch of soil to dry between waterings — olives dislike soggy soil.
  • Indoor care: Bright light is key. Rotate monthly for even growth and keep air circulation strong to prevent fungal issues.

🧑‍🌾 BEST PRACTICES FOR PLANTING & CARE (ARBEQUINA OLIVE)

Where to plant:

  • Choose a full-sun location with excellent drainage.
  • If planting in-ground, consider a slight mound or raised bed to prevent root rot.

How to plant (High & Tight method):

  1. Dig a hole just slightly wider than the pot and no deeper than the rootball.
  2. Set the tree slightly above ground level.
  3. Backfill with native soil mixed with compost for healthy root establishment.
  4. Water in thoroughly, then mulch around the base — but keep mulch off the trunk.

Watering:

  • Keep soil lightly moist during the first 8–12 weeks as roots establish.
  • Once established, water deeply but infrequently.

Feeding:

  • Feed organically with compost or worm castings.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing — excess nitrogen reduces fruiting potential.

Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and improve airflow.
  • Maintain a natural vase form and remove dead or crossing branches.

Cold protection:

  • Cover young 1-gallon trees during frost warnings until hardened off.
  • Container-grown plants can be moved indoors temporarily during cold snaps.

⚠️ CAUTIONS

  • Avoid poorly drained soil — standing water can cause root rot.
  • Protect young plants from frost or excessive humidity to prevent leaf spotting.
  • Scale insects may occasionally appear; use organic horticultural oils if needed.

🌞 FLORIDA & SOUTHEASTERN NOTES

Arbequina olives thrive as ornamental evergreens throughout Florida and the Southeast. While consistent fruiting is less common in subtropical zones, they remain valued for their lush gray-green foliage and Mediterranean charm.

Plant in a sunny, dry location and allow soil to dry between waterings. Avoid excessive fertilization, and use hardwood mulch for best results.

✅ IS THIS PLANT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Ideal for:

  • Gardeners in Zones 8–11 seeking a drought-tolerant evergreen

  • Mediterranean garden lovers and patio gardeners

Not ideal for:

  • Areas with frequent waterlogging or prolonged frost exposure
  • Shade-heavy locations with less than 6 hours of sunlight

🌼 COMPANION PLANTING (EDIBLE GUILD IDEAS)

  • Dynamic accumulators: Comfrey, vetiver (natural mulch producers)
  • Pollinator magnets: African blue basil, porterweed, native salvias

🔍 TROUBLESHOOTING

  • 🍂 Yellowing leaves on older wood → Normal seasonal leaf turnover.
  • 💧 Overwatering → Allow soil to dry between waterings.
  • 🪲 Scale or sooty mold → Wipe foliage clean, encourage beneficial insects, or treat organically.
  • ❄️ Frost damage → Protect with frost cloth until spring regrowth appears.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
