Product Details

🍇 White Mulberry (Morus alba) — 4″ Starter Size 🌿

Elegant, hardy, and sweet — a centuries-old fruit tree reborn for modern edible landscapes.

The White Mulberry (Morus alba) is more than a beautiful fruit tree — it’s a piece of living history. Originally cultivated in ancient China over 4,000 years ago, this species was prized not just for its fruit but for its silken legacy — the leaves of the White Mulberry are the exclusive food source of silkworms, making it the cornerstone of the world’s silk industry. From Asia to Europe, it was planted along trade routes of the Silk Road, symbolizing prosperity, longevity, and abundance.

The fruit itself is delicate, mild, and honey-sweet, with a hint of floral and melon-like notes that set it apart from darker, tangier mulberries. High in antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, and fiber, White Mulberries have been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine for vitality and wellness. Their pale color means they’re non-staining, and their subtle flavor makes them a chef’s favorite for drying, blending into teas, sweet sauces, jams, baked goods, and elegant desserts.

This is the mulberry that started it all — a symbol of nourishment and beauty that still offers the same ease of care and versatility today.

🍇 Fruit & Flavor (What Makes It Unique)

  • Color: Creamy white to pale pink (non-staining!)
  • Flavor: Delicately sweet, lightly floral, with honeydew + white peach notes 🍑🍈
  • Texture: Soft, juicy, mildly chewy when dried
  • Fruit Size: Medium (~1″ long)
  • Fruiting Window (FL & SE U.S.): Late spring to early summer
  • Yield: Heavy, reliable producer once mature
  • Bonus: Dried White Mulberries stay naturally sweet—no sugar needed!
🦜 Bird bonus: Pale berries are less visible to birds, meaning more harvest for you and less mess under the canopy.

🌸 Why Grow the White Mulberry?

  • Flavor rarity: Subtly sweet, honey-like berries—different from the darker, tangy varieties.
  • Cold-tolerant: One of the hardiest mulberries available (Zones 5–10).
  • Shade + elegance: Large, lobed leaves form a beautiful, cooling canopy.
  • Low maintenance: Fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and disease-resistant.
  • Versatile fruit: Fresh, dried, or frozen—excellent for smoothies, cereals, and baked goods.
  • Less mess: Light fruit is non-staining and draws fewer birds.
⚠️ Expect natural cycles: As a deciduous tree, White Mulberry drops leaves each fall, may look sparse after heavy rains, and rebounds vigorously with warmth.

🪴 Container & Landscape Notes

  • Best in-ground performance: Grows quickly with deep roots and wide canopy.
  • Container option: 4″ starter → 1–3 gal7–15 gal; prune to 6–10 ft for patio use.
  • Not suited for full indoor growth; use a moveable pot strategy for cold protection.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining loam or sandy soil enriched with compost.

🌾 Seasonal Habits (Florida & Temperate Climates)

  • Spring: Buds open with bright new leaves; fruit forms on new growth.
  • Early Summer: Fruit ripens to ivory-white and pink tones.
  • Fall: Leaves yellow and drop; natural dormancy period.
  • Winter: Bare canopy displays beautiful branching; pruning window.

🧑‍🌾 Best Practices for Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Full sun, well-drained soil. Avoid standing water or low spots. Site away from driveways or patios (though berries are non-staining, roots still need room).

The GreenDreams “High & Tight” Method

1️⃣ Dig a hole just wider than the pot and no deeper.

2️⃣ Set root ball 1–2″ above grade (root flare visible).

3️⃣ Backfill with native soil + compost, firm gently.

4️⃣ Mulch 2–3″ hardwood chips, pulled away from trunk.

Watering

  • Establishment: Water daily first week → 2–3× weekly next 6–8 weeks.
  • After year one: Deep weekly watering in dry spells only.
  • Containers: Maintain steady moisture; avoid soggy conditions.

Feeding

  • Top-dress with compost or balanced organic fertilizer (5-5-5) each spring.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing; this encourages leafy growth over fruit.

Pruning

  • Late winter: Remove crossing/dead wood; open canopy for air circulation.
  • Growing season: Tip-prune to maintain shape or reduce height.
  • Bleeding caution: Save big cuts for dormancy to avoid excess sap loss.

🌼 Companion & Support Guild Ideas

  • Nitrogen fixers: Pigeon Pea, Sunn Hemp—support steady soil fertility.
  • Biomass plants: Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia) + Fakahatchee Grass (carbon mulch pair).
  • Pollinators: Blue Porterweed, African Blue Basil, Salvia.
  • Aesthetics: Turmeric, Banana, Ginger, Chaya—complement the tropical canopy look.
🌿 Chop-and-Drop Tip: Cut and drop companion plant biomass around the base—free fertilizer, better moisture, and weed suppression.

Troubleshooting (Florida & Beyond)

Symptom Likely Cause Organic Fix
Leaf yellowing / drop Natural dormancy or weather shift Normal; resumes in spring
Slow fruiting in young trees Needs maturity or sun 1–2 years to full bearing; full sun essential
Overly leafy, low fruit Too much nitrogen Reduce feeding; tip-prune to renew fruiting wood
Pale leaves Minor nutrient deficiency Add compost/mineral amendment
Bird nibbling Rare (light fruit less visible) Harvest daily; optional netting
Root-knot nematodes Common in sandy soils Use Sunn Hemp, mulch, beneficial nematodes
Sap bleeding after pruning Pruned during active growth Prune in dormancy (winter)

⚠️ Cautions

  • Roots: Give ample space (20 ft from foundations).
  • Height: Plan ahead—White Mulberries can get tall fast.
  • Leafless phase: Normal dormancy, not disease.
  • Not for indoor culture (needs cold cues).

🌟 Is White Mulberry Right for You?

✅ Ideal for:

  • Gardeners in Zones 5–10 wanting a cold-hardy, low-mess fruit tree.
  • Flavor lovers who appreciate light, honey-like sweetness.
  • Landscapers seeking shade + ornamental beauty with fruit bonus.
  • Families wanting bird-friendly, non-staining fruit.

❌ Not ideal for:

  • Tight urban spaces (roots spread wide).
  • Indoor or waterlogged sites.

🚚 Shipping & Handling

  • Ships: 4″ starter (young but vigorous).
  • Best regions: Florida, Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic (UPS Ground; ships Mondays).
  • Outside region: Allow 2–3 weeks for adjustment under filtered light & consistent moisture.
  • Heat/cold disclaimer: Buyer discretion during extremes; we’re not responsible for weather stress.
  • Dormancy: May arrive leafless in winter—this is normal and healthy.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
