🍇 Unryu Corkscrew Mulberry (Morus alba ‘Unryu’) — 1-Gallon Size 🌿

A sculptural, fruiting masterpiece — bigger, stronger, and ready to make an impression.

Our 1-Gallon Unryu Mulberry is a step up in beauty and readiness — more established roots, faster growth, and stronger structure for shaping into a living art form. With its signature zig-zag “dragon branch” architecture and sweet purple berries, this cultivar transforms ordinary gardens into galleries. Whether you’re creating a Japanese-inspired courtyard, an edible landscape with personality, or a patio showpiece, ‘Unryu’ offers the perfect blend of artistry and utility.

🌸 Why Choose the 1-Gallon Unryu?

  • More impact, faster: A 1-gallon Unryu has stronger roots and thicker branching, letting you shape it sooner.
  • Living art: Perfect for entryways, patios, and focal points; striking form even when leafless.
  • Edible beauty: Sweet, deep-purple berries appear in late spring–summer on new growth.
  • Cold-hardy: Withstands temperate winters; reliable through Zone 5.
  • Easy maintenance: Moderate growth rate means less pruning than heavy producers.
  • Four-season interest: From bare sculptural limbs in winter to lush summer foliage and golden fall color.
🌿 Note: Choose this size if you want a faster start and easier transplant success than a 4″ starter.

🍇 Fruit & Harvest

  • Flavor: Mild, sweet, juicy — perfect for snacking, baking, and homemade preserves.
  • Color: Deep purple-black when ripe.
  • Fruit Size: Small–medium; flavorful and low-acid.
  • Season:
    • Zones 5–8: July–September
    • Florida/Southeast: Late spring → early summer
  • Fruiting habits: Light-bearing (ornamental emphasis), but pruning stimulates extra fruiting wood.
  • Yield: Light-to-moderate — enough for fresh eating and small-batch treats.

Harvest tip: Pick ripe berries daily to prevent drop and staining.

🎨 An Edible Work of Art

‘Unryu’ is prized not just for its fruit, but for its living sculpture qualities:

  • Winter: Bare, corkscrew limbs form a “dragon in the clouds” silhouette.
  • Spring: Green shoots unfurl, forming a soft halo of foliage.
  • Summer: Sweet purple fruit and lush canopy.
  • Fall: Golden leaves and striking bark.

Design ideas:

  • Front-yard specimen or entry accent
  • Patio bonsai-style container tree
  • Japanese-inspired or modern minimalist landscape focal point
  • Mixed edible/ornamental border for multi-season contrast

🌾 Seasonal Habits (Florida & Temperate Climates)

  • Spring: Bud break, new shoots, and fruit set.
  • Late Spring–Summer: Fruit ripens; canopy full and lush.
  • Fall: Golden foliage and natural leaf drop.
  • Winter: Deciduous dormancy—bare, sculptural branches on display.
🍂 Seasonal disclaimer: Unryu’s leaf loss, spotting, or bare appearance in cool months is normal dormancy, not decline. New leaves emerge with warmth.

🧺 Culinary Uses

Fresh eating • Jams/preserves • Cobblers/pies • Smoothies & yogurt toppers • Dried for teas/snacks

Nutritional bonus: Naturally high in anthocyanins, vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants—a functional fruit with visual flair.

🪴 Container & Patio Growing (1-Gallon Advantage)

  • Pot-up path: From 1-gallon → 7–10 gallon container
  • Container material: Clay, glazed ceramic, or breathable grow bag (≥20″ diameter)
  • Soil mix: Rich, loamy & well-draining (add compost & coarse bark)
  • Root management: Root-prune every 2–3 years; refresh soil annually
  • Sun: Full sun outdoors year-round; not for indoor growing

🧑‍🌾 Best Practices for Planting & Care

🌱 The GreenDreams “High & Tight” Method

  1. Plant 1–2″ above grade (root flare visible).
  2. Backfill with native soil + compost; firm gently.
  3. Top-dress with biochar + compost + azomite (trace minerals).
  4. Mulch 2–3″ hardwood chips, pulled away from trunk.
  5. Water deeply after planting.

💧 Watering

  • First 2 weeks: Water daily (especially in sun/heat).
  • Next 4–6 weeks: 2–3× weekly deep soaks.
  • Established: Weekly in dry spells; adjust for rain.
  • Containers: Keep evenly moist—don’t let dry out completely.

✂️ Pruning

  • Best timing: Late fall–winter (dormant).
  • Avoid heavy pruning in spring/summer to prevent sap bleeding.
  • Tip-prune lightly in summer for shape.
  • Maintain 8–12 ft for accessibility and fruiting wood renewal.

🌱 Companion Plants for Regenerative Fertility

In temperate zones (Zones 5–8):

  • Comfrey for nutrient-rich green mulch.
  • Clover for nitrogen-fixing groundcover.
  • Spring bulbs for ornamental underplanting.

In Florida/warm zones (Zones 8–9):

  • 🌻 Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) — nitrogen-rich biomass.
  • 🌾 Fakahatchee Grass (Tripsacum dactyloides) — native carbon-rich mulch source.
  • 🌱 Pigeon Pea — nitrogen fixer and pollinator plant.
  • 🌿 Sunn Hemp — suppresses nematodes, adds organic matter.

Chop & Drop: Periodically cut and drop companion foliage to decompose into a balanced, slow-release mulch—free, sustainable fertilization.

Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom Likely Cause Solution
Leaf drop or bareness Natural dormancy or shipping stress Normal; new growth returns with warmth
Yellow/spotted leaves Rain splash or excess moisture Remove worst leaves; improve airflow
Weak fruiting Lack of pruning/sun Prune annually; ensure full sun
Sap bleeding Pruned in active growth Prune only when dormant
Fragile limbs Twisting habit; wind exposure Stake young plants; avoid rough handling
Scale/whitefly Minor pest issue Neem oil or insecticidal soap
Root-knot nematodes (FL) Sandy soils Use Sunn Hemp, compost, mulch; containers work well

⚠️ Cautions

  • Fruit stains hard surfaces; plant away from patios/drives.
  • Branches are fragile—avoid rough handling.
  • Not for waterlogged soils; prefers good drainage.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.
