🌼 What Makes Manzanilla Criolla Special?

Unlike typical European feverfew, this Latin American line stands out with:

  • 🌿 Broader, bolder leaves (less finely divided)
  • 🌬️ Stronger camphor aroma
  • 🌼 Bright daisy-like blooms all season
  • 🐝 Excellent pollinator attraction

This is a plant that blends function + beauty + heritage—perfect for edible landscapes and herbal gardens.

Origin Story & Cultural Significance

Feverfew has roots in ancient Europe, where it was grown in monastery gardens and used in traditional herbal medicine dating back to Greek physicians like Dioscorides.

🌍 Through Spanish colonization, feverfew spread into Latin America—where it adapted, naturalized, and became known as:

“Manzanilla Criolla” (meaning native chamomile, though it’s not a true chamomile)

Over generations, it became a staple in:

  • Household herbal remedies
  • Folk medicine for headaches and fevers
  • Backyard medicinal gardens across Central & South America

This Latin American form reflects both cultural adaptation and botanical evolution—a living piece of herbal history.

🌱 Top Benefits & Uses

🌿 Medicinal & Herbal Use (Traditional)

  • Commonly used for migraine prevention
  • Historically used to reduce fevers
  • Supports nervous system balance
  • Contains parthenolide, a key anti-inflammatory compound

⚠️ Note: Always consult a qualified professional before medicinal use.

How It’s Used

  • Dried leaves & flowers → herbal teas
  • Fresh or dried → tinctures
  • Powdered → capsules

🌸 Ornamental Value

  • Bright, cheerful blooms for months
  • Ideal for borders, herb spirals, pollinator gardens
  • Works beautifully in mixed edible landscapes

🐝 Wildlife Benefits

  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
  • Supports biodiversity in small and large gardens

🍽️ Culinary & Herbal Applications

While not a traditional “food crop,” Manzanilla Criolla plays a strong role in herbal kitchens:

Most Common Uses:

  • Herbal teas (slightly bitter, aromatic)
  • Blended with mint or lemon balm for balance
  • Infused oils or extracts

Flavor Profile:

  • Bitter, herbal, slightly citrus + camphor notes
  • Stronger than chamomile

💡 Pro Tip: Drying reduces bitterness and irritation.

🌿 Seasonal Growth Guide (Florida & Zone 9)

Manzanilla Criolla is technically perennial, but behaves differently by region:

🌱 Spring:

  • Rapid vegetative growth
  • Best time to plant

🌞 Summer:

  • Continuous flowering
  • Attracts pollinators heavily

🍂 Fall:

  • Light pruning encourages regrowth

❄️ Winter (Florida):

  • May slow down but often remains semi-evergreen
  • In colder zones: dies back and returns in spring

🧠 Not fully deciduous in Florida—more of a soft perennial with seasonal slowdowns.

🪴 Container & Indoor Growing

Container Growing:

  • Thrives in 1–3 gallon containers
  • Upgrade from 4” once roots fill pot

Indoor Growing:

  • Possible near bright window or grow light
  • Prefers airflow—avoid stagnant indoor conditions

Soil Mix:

  • Well-draining mix (potting soil + perlite or sand)
  • Slightly dry between waterings preferred

🌿 How to Transplant & Scale Up

Pot Progression Guide:

4” → 1 Gallon → 3 Gallon → Landscape

When to Transplant:

  • Roots circling pot
  • Soil drying too quickly
  • Visible growth slowdown

How to Transplant:

  • Keep plant in original pot for 2–4 weeks after arrival
  • Wait for new growth flush
  • Step up gradually—not too fast

🪴 Containers & soil can be sourced locally or online—search for organic potting mix + breathable nursery pots.

Best Practices for Planting and Care

Where to Plant

  • Full sun to partial shade
  • Well-draining soil (critical)
  • Moderate wind tolerance
  • Low salt tolerance (avoid coastal exposure)

Planting Instructions

  • Dig hole slightly wider than pot, same depth
  • Plant high & tight for drainage
  • Backfill with compost + native soil

🌿 Companion Planting (Herbal Guild)

Pair with:

  • 🌼 Mexican Sunflower (pollinator magnet)
  • 🌿 Lemon Balm (tea synergy)
  • 🌱 Basil (pest deterrent)
  • 🌾 Clumping grasses (biomass + mulch)

Creates a functional medicinal herb zone 🌿

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.
