💡 Best fruit set comes from:

  • Dry conditions during flowering
  • Good airflow
  • Minimal nitrogen input during bloom

Origin Story — A Mango Built for Modern Living

Pickering mango traces back to Florida breeding programs, selected specifically for compact growth and exceptional flavor.

Named after horticulturist Dr. Robert Pickering, this cultivar was developed to solve a real problem:

👉 Most mango trees get too large for residential landscapes.

Pickering flipped the script:

  • Smaller tree
  • Easier management
  • High-quality fruit

🌿 A true backyard mango revolution.

🌿 Why Grow Pickering Mango?

  • 🏡 Perfect for small yards & suburban landscapes
  • 🪴 One of the best mango trees for container growing
  • 🥭 Premium fruit without commercial tree size
  • ✂️ Minimal pruning required
  • 🌴 Ideal for edible landscape design
  • 🐝 Supports pollinators during bloom

Culinary Uses & Cultural Value

This is where Pickering shines.

🥭 How People Use It:

  • Fresh eating (top-tier dessert mango)
  • Smoothies & tropical drinks 🥤
  • Mango salsa 🌶️
  • Sorbets & ice cream 🍨
  • Dehydrated mango slices
  • Coconut-mango desserts 🥥

Cultural Context:

Mangoes are one of the most culturally significant fruits worldwide, used across:

  • Caribbean cuisine
  • Indian desserts & chutneys
  • Southeast Asian dishes

💡 Pickering’s coconut notes make it especially valuable for fusion tropical recipes.

🌿 Ornamental & Landscape Appeal

  • 🌳 Dense, rounded canopy
  • 🍃 Glossy, deep green leaves
  • 🌼 Fragrant panicle flowers
  • 🏡 Clean structure—great for focal planting

Works beautifully:

  • Near patios
  • Around pools
  • In edible landscape guilds

🪴 Container Growing (One of the BEST Mangoes for This)

Pickering is elite-tier for container growing.

Recommended Setup:

  • Start: 1 gallon (current size)
  • Upgrade: 7–15 gallon container within 6–12 months
  • Long-term: 15–25 gallon pot

Soil Mix:

  • Well-draining blend:
    • Pine bark fines
    • Sand
    • Compost
  • Avoid heavy, water-retentive soils

Placement:

  • Full sun
  • Protected from strong wind early on

💧 Water daily in containers during warm months

🌱 Planting & Care Guide (GreenDreams Method)

📍 Where to Plant

  • Full sun (6+ hours minimum)
  • Well-draining soil (Florida sand = excellent)

🌿 Planting Instructions (High & Tight Method)

  • Dig hole same depth as container
  • Slightly elevate root ball above grade
  • Backfill firmly without burying trunk

🪵 Mulching

  • 2–3 inches hardwood mulch
  • Keep mulch away from trunk

💧 Watering

  • Establishment: 3–4x per week
  • Mature trees: Deep watering 1–2x weekly
  • Always adjust based on rainfall

⚗️ Fertilizer — The #1 Mistake to Avoid

⚠️ This is critical:

Mango trees DO NOT respond well to nitrogen before flowering

  • 🧠 High nitrogen = leaf growth, reduced fruiting
  • 🍃 Tree puts energy into foliage, not fruit

Best Practice:

  • Light feeding during early establishment only
  • Minimal inputs once mature
  • Focus on:
    • 🪵 Mulch
    • 🌱 Soil biology
    • 💧 Proper watering

🌾 Mango thrives in Florida’s natural sandy soils without heavy fertilization

🍂 Seasonal Growth Patterns (Florida Focus)

Mango trees are evergreen, but still seasonal:

  • 🌸 Spring: Flowering & fruit set
  • 🌞 Summer: Fruit development & harvest
  • 🍃 Late Summer: Vegetative flush (new growth)
  • ❄️ Winter: Slows growth, possible leaf stress

💡 Leaf yellowing after harvest = normal

🌿 Companion Planting (Food Forest Friendly)

Build a thriving mango guild:

🌼 Pollinator Plants:

  • Salvia
  • Basil
  • Sweet Almond
  • Vitex

🍍 Groundcovers:

  • Sunshine Mimosa
  • Longevity Spinach

🔍 Troubleshooting Guide

Issue Cause Solution
🍃 Excess leaf growth, no fruit Too much nitrogen Reduce fertilization
🍂 Yellow leaves Overwatering Improve drainage
🐛 Leaf damage Insects Neem oil / encourage beneficials
❄️ Cold damage Frost exposure Cover young trees
🌊 Root rot Poor drainage Plant high & tight

⚠️ Cautions

  • Sensitive to frost when young ❄️
  • Avoid overwatering 💦
  • Avoid heavy fertilization 🧪
  • Protect from strong wind early on 🌬️

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.

By completing a purchase, you confirm that you have read, understand, and agree to all shipping policies, responsibilities, and conditions outlined above.
