Jaboticaba Tree Grape - Sabara (Myrciaria jaboticaba) 3G
🍇 Sabará Jaboticaba Tree (Plinia jaboticaba) — 3-Gallon Tropical Fruit Tree 🌿
The original Brazilian “tree-grape,” with stronger structure and long-term potential
Sabará is the jaboticaba that defines the species. Cultivated for generations across Brazil, this iconic variety produces small, thin-skinned, intensely sweet fruit directly on its trunk, turning the tree itself into a living harvest display once mature.
This 3-gallon Sabará Jaboticaba is a well-established juvenile (approximately 4–5 years old) with a stronger root system, thicker trunk wood, and improved resilience compared to smaller sizes. While Sabará remains a long-game cultivar, this size offers a meaningful upgrade in vigor and stability for growers committed to container culture and consistent care.
⚠️ Important note:
This tree is not considered close to blooming. Sabará requires patience, even at this size. What you gain here is structure and resilience, not immediate flowering.

🍇 Fruit, Flavor & Fruiting Habits (When Mature)
Flavor profile
Sabará is widely regarded as the benchmark jaboticaba flavor — exceptionally sweet, aromatic, and clean. Often described as a blend of grape, muscadine, and tropical berry with gentle acidity.
Texture
- Thin, dark purple-black skin
- Juicy, gelatinous white pulp
- Classic jaboticaba “pop” when eaten fresh
Fruit size
- Small (¾–1″), but produced in dense clusters directly on the trunk
Shelf life
- Short; best eaten fresh or processed quickly
⏳ Time to Fruit — 3-Gallon (Honest Expectations)
From this 3-gallon size, plan approximately:
- ~3–6 additional years before consistent fruiting under excellent care
Some growers may see isolated flowers earlier, but Sabará should be approached as a long-term investment, not a quick producer. We intentionally overestimate timelines so expectations remain realistic and trust is preserved.
Once fully mature, Sabará can produce 3–4+ fruiting cycles per year in warm, humid climates with steady moisture — sometimes even pushing light crops during Florida’s mild winters.
🌱 Why Choose the 3-Gallon Sabará?
- Thicker trunk and stronger branch structure
- More developed root system for container life
- Better tolerance of repotting and irrigation fluctuations
- Improved long-term stability compared to 1G & 2G sizes
- Ideal for growers who want health and resilience, not rushed timelines
This is the size for growers who want to build the tree correctly from here forward.
🌿 GreenDreams Jaboticaba Standard (Sabará-Specific)
At GreenDreams, Sabará Jaboticaba is treated as a filtered-light tropical understory tree, not a full-sun orchard crop.
🌤 Light (Critical to Long-Term Success)
- Filtered or dappled light is preferred at ALL stages
- Direct, exposed sun — especially Florida afternoon sun — commonly causes:
- Leaf scorch
- Growth stalls
- Stress-related leaf drop
- Delayed or inconsistent flowering
Even very large specimens (30-gallon or larger) typically perform better in filtered light than in full sun.
🪴 Container Culture: Why It Outperforms In-Ground
We strongly recommend container growing for Sabará, especially in Florida and alkaline soils.
Why containers win
- Full control of acidic pH (5.5–6.5)
- Superior root oxygenation
- Supports heavy, frequent watering
- Simplifies cold protection
- Prevents long-term micronutrient lockout
In practice, container-grown jaboticabas often outperform in-ground trees in both growth quality and fruiting reliability.
🌱 Our Proven 85/15 Growing Medium
Sabará roots are fibrous and oxygen-hungry.
Use this mix consistently
- 85% peat moss (or coco coir)
- 15% perlite (or fine pine bark)
Optional (5–10% total):
- Compost
- Worm castings
- Biochar
🚫 Avoid sand or garden soil in containers — compaction leads to decline.
💧 Watering Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
Sabará Jaboticaba is a heavy water user.
- Containers: Daily watering during warm months
- In-ground: Use drip irrigation, never overhead sprays
- Soil must remain evenly moist at all times
- Never allow the root zone to dry completely
Consistent moisture is the single biggest driver of:
- Healthy growth
- Trunk thickening
- Eventual flower initiation
- Repeat fruiting cycles later in life
🌾 Seasonal Habits (Florida & Similar Climates)
Sabará is evergreen, not deciduous.
| Season | What to Expect | Care Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Vegetative growth flush | Increase watering; light organic feed |
| Summer | Steady growth | Maintain filtered light; daily moisture |
| Fall | Slower growth | Refresh mulch; avoid stress |
| Winter | Growth slows | Frost protection; never let soil dry |
Any leaf drop is stress-related, not seasonal dormancy.
🍽 Culinary Uses & Applications (Once Mature)
- Fresh eating straight from the trunk
- Classic jaboticaba jam & jelly
- Syrups for desserts and drinks

🪴 Planting & Care — Sabará Jaboticaba (3-Gallon)
After Arrival
Keep your Sabará Jaboticaba in its original container for at least 30 days OR until new growth appears (whichever comes later). This allows shipping stress to pass before transplanting.
Where to Plant
- Filtered or dappled light
- Protected from salt spray and drying winds
- Containers strongly preferred
GreenDreams “High & Tight” Method
- Dig a hole only slightly wider than the container
- Plant at the same depth — root flare just above grade
- Pack soil firmly
- Top-dress with compost + biochar + minerals
- Mulch 2–3″, keeping mulch off the trunk
Fertilizing
- Gentle organic fertilizers during warm months
- Add micronutrients (iron, magnesium) if leaves pale
Pruning (Important)
- Minimal only — remove dead or crossing branches
- Avoid heavy pruning at all stages
- Fruit forms on older wood

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS
Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.
Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.
If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.
⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS
All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.
📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.
🚚 Typical Transit Times:
-
Florida: 1–2 days
-
Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days
-
Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days
Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.
Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.
