🍯 ‘Pingo de Mel’ Jaboticaba Tree (Myrciaria jaboticaba) — 1-Gallon Tropical Fruit Tree 🌿

Honey-sweet fruit • caramel notes • classic trunk-fruiting beauty

The ‘Pingo de Mel’ Jaboticaba—whose name translates to “drop of honey”—is beloved for its exceptionally sweet, caramel-like flavor and elegant cauliflorous fruiting habit. Fruits cling directly to the trunk and mature branches, turning the tree into a living sculpture that’s as ornamental as it is delicious.

Among classic black jaboticabas, ‘Pingo de Mel’ is prized for remarkable sweetness, smooth texture, and reliable performance when grown with steady moisture and slightly acidic soil. It’s a favorite for collectors who value flavor nuance and long-term success in containers.

Our 1-gallon ‘Pingo de Mel’ is a well-established juvenile (approximately 2–3 years old)—ideal for container culture and careful development toward future fruiting.

🍇 Fruit, Flavor & Fruiting Habits

Fruit appearance

  • Deep purple-black berries borne directly on trunk and limbs
  • Classic jaboticaba look with elegant cauliflory

Pulp & flavor

  • Intensely sweet, often described as honeyed with caramel notes
  • Juicy, jelly-like pulp with thin edible skin at full ripeness
  • Low acidity and smooth mouthfeel

Fruiting rhythm

  • Multiple flushes per year once mature, especially in warm, humid climates
  • Spring and summer peaks; occasional off-season fruiting during mild winters with steady moisture

⏳ Time to Fruit (Honest Expectations)

‘Pingo de Mel’ follows classic jaboticaba timelines.

From a 1-gallon plant, plan approximately:

  • ~5–7 years before consistent fruiting under excellent care

Some growers may see flowers earlier, especially in containers with perfect moisture and pH, but we intentionally overestimate timelines so expectations remain realistic.

Once mature, ‘Pingo de Mel’ can become a heavy bearer, rewarding patience with repeated harvests.

📜 Origin & Cultural Notes — ‘Pingo de Mel’ 🌎

Native to Brazil, jaboticabas are deeply woven into backyard gardens and local markets. ‘Pingo de Mel’ is a named selection celebrated for its exceptional sweetness, earning its “honey drop” nickname among growers and fruit lovers. It represents the dessert-grade end of classic black jaboticabas, prized wherever flavor comes first.

🪴 Why GreenDreams Recommends Container Culture

At GreenDreams, nearly all jaboticabas—including ‘Pingo de Mel’—are grown in containers because container culture consistently outperforms in-ground planting, especially in Florida.

Container culture allows

  • Precise control of acidic pH (5.5–6.5)
  • Excellent root oxygenation
  • Support for heavy, frequent watering
  • Easy cold and weather protection
  • Reduced micronutrient lockout in alkaline soils

In our experience, container-grown jaboticabas are healthier, denser, and more reliable fruiters than many in-ground trees.

🌱 Our Proven 50/50 Growing Medium

Jaboticaba roots require moisture and oxygen.

Recommended mix

  • 50% peat moss or coconut coir
  • 50% perlite or fine pine bark

Optional (small amounts):

  • Compost
  • Worm castings
  • Biochar

🚫 Avoid sand, clay, or dense garden soil in containers—compaction leads to root stress and decline.

💧 Watering Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

‘Pingo de Mel’ Jaboticaba is a heavy water user.

  • Containers: Daily watering during warm months is typical
  • In-ground: Use drip irrigation only, never overhead sprays
  • Soil must remain evenly moist at all times
  • Never allow the root zone to dry completely

Consistent moisture is the single biggest factor in healthy growth and future fruiting.

☀️ Light & Placement (Standardized Across Jaboticabas)

🌤 Plants Up to ~30-Gallon Size

  • Filtered or dappled light strongly preferred
  • Avoid direct afternoon sun
  • Ideal locations:
    • Shaded patios or lanais
    • Screened enclosures
    • Under high, open canopy trees
    • Greenhouses or sunrooms

🌳 Very Large, Fully Established Trees (30G+)

  • Can tolerate more sun only with constant moisture
  • Even then, filtered light often produces healthier foliage and steadier fruiting
  • Increase sun exposure gradually over months, not weeks

Pruning

Although many fruit trees respond well to hard pruning, jaboticabas do not.

‘Pingo de Mel’ does not respond well to heavy pruning.

Why

  • Jaboticabas refill best on existing branches
  • Hard pruning causes stress flushes of tender growth
  • New growth is extremely sun-sensitive
  • Leads to yellowing, leaf burn, and growth stalls

Recommended approach

  • Remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches
  • Avoid cutting back healthy wood
  • Allow time, moisture, and filtered light for natural canopy recovery

🪴 Transplanting & Container Step-Up (Critical Guidance)

🚫 Do NOT transplant immediately after arrival

For all jaboticabas from GreenDreams:

➡️ Wait at least 30 days OR until new growth appears (whichever comes later) before transplanting.

This ensures shipping stress has passed and roots are actively growing.

Step-Up Plan

1G → 3G → 7G → 15–30G (larger sizes typically for local pickup)

When to Transplant

  • Roots circling the bottom
  • Water running straight through the pot
  • Soil drying unusually fast

How to Transplant

  • Do not disturb the root ball
  • Plant at the same depth (root flare just above soil line)
  • Pack soil firmly
  • Return to filtered light during recovery

🌾 Seasonal Habits (Florida & Similar Climates)

  • Evergreen year-round
  • Growth flushes during warm, humid periods
  • Brief leaf drop may occur after cold or drought stress
  • Once mature, fruiting may occur multiple times per year

‘Pingo de Mel’ does not go dormant in mild winters—it simply slows, then resumes growth.

Troubleshooting Guide — ‘Pingo de Mel’ Jaboticaba

Yellow leaves → High pH or drought → Acidic mix + consistent moisture

Leaf scorch → Excess sun → Increase filtered light

No flowering → Stress or dryness → Stabilize watering + shade

Leaf drop → Cold or drought → Protect + maintain moisture

Root rot → Dense soil → Repot into airy 50/50 mix

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
