🌿 White Kilo Guava — The Legendary Softball-Sized Tropical Guava 🍈🌴

Psidium guajava ‘White Kilo’

Few fruit trees stop gardeners mid-conversation the way White Kilo Guava does.

This remarkable Asian guava cultivar produces massive, softball-sized fruits — often weighing 1–2.5 pounds each — with creamy white flesh, fragrant tropical sweetness, and the unmistakable aroma that only a perfectly ripe guava can deliver.

Originally cultivated by Asian growers seeking a larger, sweeter guava, this variety quickly became famous for its enormous fruit size, productivity, and culinary versatility. Today it remains one of the most sought-after guavas for tropical home orchards and backyard food forests.

At GreenDreams, we love plants that combine flavor, beauty, and productivity — and White Kilo Guava checks every box. Whether you're building a Florida food forest, growing fruit for your family, or experimenting with tropical cooking, this tree brings serious harvest potential to your landscape.

  • Blend into smoothies and tropical drinks

Traditional Culinary Applications

  • Guava jams and jellies
  • Guava paste (popular in Latin cuisine)

  • Fresh juice and aguas frescas

Around the World

Different cultures use guava in unique ways:

  • Asia: sliced fresh or used in pickled fruit snacks
  • Latin America: guava paste with cheese (a classic pairing)

Guava fruit is also valued for high vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber.

White Kilo Guava is considered a high-yielding cultivar once established.

Typical characteristics include:

  • Bloom Season: Spring through summer
  • Harvest Season in Florida: Late summer through fall

Key ornamental features include:

  • Glossy green tropical leaves
  • Attractive peeling bark on older trunks
  • Fragrant white blossoms
  • Dense branching structure ideal for pruning

In edible landscaping, White Kilo Guava works well as:

  • Backyard orchard tree
  • Patio fruit tree (when pruned)
  • Food forest canopy layer
  • Tropical accent plant

Origin Story — The Asian Giant Guava

White Kilo Guava traces its origins to Asian guava breeding programs, where growers aimed to create larger fruit while maintaining the sweet flavor of traditional guava varieties.

Through generations of selective propagation, growers preserved traits such as:

  • extremely large fruit size
  • mild sweet flavor
  • high productivity

The name “Kilo” refers to the fruit’s potential to reach nearly a kilogram in weight, a feature that made the cultivar famous among tropical fruit collectors.

Today, the variety is cultivated widely in Southeast Asia, tropical America, and warm regions of the United States.

🌞 Growing White Kilo Guava in Florida & Similar Climates

Guava thrives in warm climates and is particularly well suited to Florida, Texas, and the southeastern United States.

  • Full sun is essential
  • Minimum 6–8 hours daily

Soil

Guavas are adaptable but perform best in:

  • well-draining soil
  • sandy loam or organic garden soil

Spring

  • New growth flush begins
  • Flower buds develop

Summer

  • Heavy vegetative growth

Where to Plant

Choose a location that provides:

  • Well-draining soil
  • Space for canopy expansion

Avoid low areas where water collects.

When planting your White Kilo Guava (Psidium guajava), follow these steps:

  • Dig a hole only slightly wider than the container
  • Keep the tree planted at the same depth as the nursery pot
  • Pack soil firmly around the root ball
  • Do not bury the trunk

GreenDreams recommends the “High & Tight” planting method for best success.

Mulch with hardwood mulch but keep mulch away from the trunk.

💧 Watering Guide

Container Plants

While in the nursery container:

  • water daily during warm months
  • ensure drainage holes remain open

In-Ground Trees

  • Deep watering 2–3 times weekly during dry periods
  • Use drip irrigation instead of overhead watering

Mulching helps maintain consistent moisture.

✂️ Pruning Techniques

White Kilo Guava responds very well to pruning.

Recommended practices:

  • Maintain height around 8–10 ft for easy harvest
  • Remove crossing branches
  • Thin interior canopy to improve airflow
  • Prune after fruit harvest

Guavas can also be trained into hedgerows or small orchard trees.

🪴 Growing White Kilo Guava in Containers

Yes — guava can grow very well in containers.

Recommended container sizes:

  • 3-gallon starter
  • 7-gallon intermediate
  • 15–25 gallon mature container

Potting Mix

Use a well-draining mix such as:

  • compost
  • pine bark fines
  • coconut coir
  • perlite or vermiculite

Repot when roots begin circling the container.

Always allow 30 days of recovery after shipping before transplanting.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
