🍏 Fruit & Flavor Notes

  • Look: Large, rounded “egg-shaped” fruit with thin, smooth, bright-green skin that stays green when ripe.
  • Flesh: Pink to amber inside, soft, custardy, and sweet with light tropical undertones.
  • Flavor: A refreshing blend of honey, melon, and vanilla cream, unique among green-skinned figs.
  • Use: Delicious fresh off the tree, in fig tarts, preserves, salads, or charcuterie boards.
  • Harvest Season:
    • Florida & Gulf South (Zones 9–10): June through August; a smaller second crop may occur in early fall.
    • Southeast & Coastal Zones 8: Typically mid- to late summer, depending on rainfall and pruning schedule.
  • Yield: Heavy bearing with regular irrigation and compost-rich soil; self-fertile and reliable in humid climates.

🌱 Top Benefits & Uses

  • Culinary: Sweet and mildly tropical flavor, perfect for jams, pastries, and cheese pairings.
  • Landscape: A showy ornamental with broad, sculptural leaves and upright branching.
  • Container Friendly: Performs beautifully in large 15–25 gal containers, ideal for patios and courtyards.
  • Self-Fertile: No second fig needed for pollination — fruits form easily under Florida’s subtropical sun.
  • Low Maintenance: Adaptable to sandy or loamy soils when drainage is good; excellent choice for organic growers.

🌼 Companion & Support Planting

Soil Builders & Garden Allies

  • Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan) — nitrogen fixer and light shade companion.
  • Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) — rapid biomass producer; ideal for mulching.
  • Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) — anchors slopes and cycles silica.
  • Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) — deep taproot nutrient miner and dynamic accumulator.

Pollinator & Aesthetic Companions

  • Pineapple Sage, African Blue Basil, and Sweet Almond Verbena attract pollinators and beneficial insects.
  • Surround with Rosemary, Lemongrass, or Purple Basil for textural and aromatic contrast.

Seasonal Care (Florida & Similar Climates)

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Deciduous — expect natural leaf drop. Protect young trees from frost with covers or mulch.
  • Spring (Mar–Apr): New shoots emerge; apply compost or organic fertilizer as growth resumes.
  • Summer (May–Aug): Active fruiting season. Maintain consistent moisture and mulch 3–4″ deep.
  • Fall (Sept–Nov): Light pruning after harvest; clean up fallen leaves to prevent rust or fungal issues.

🪴 Container & Indoor Growing Tips

  • Container Size: Begin in 3 gal; up-pot to 15–25 gal as the tree matures.
  • Soil Mix: Fast-draining blend of pine bark, compost, and perlite.
  • Lighting: Full sun outdoors; can be overwintered indoors in a cool, bright space (35–50°F).
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist — not soggy. Avoid dramatic dry/wet cycles to reduce fruit cracking.

Where (and Where Not) to Plant

  • Choose: Full sun, slightly elevated or mounded soil; ensure excellent drainage.
  • Avoid: Flood-prone areas, shade, or heavy clay soils that retain moisture.

✂️ Pruning Techniques

  • Young Trees: Shape early to create a strong open canopy; tip back branches ⅓ to promote bushiness.
  • After Harvest: Remove crossing or dead wood, thin for airflow, and shorten long shoots.
  • Container Trees: Pinch branch tips during active growth to keep compact and encourage fruit set.

💧 Water & Nutrition

  • Establishment: Water deeply 2–3 times per week during first 2–3 months.
  • Mature Trees: Water weekly during drought; adjust frequency in rainy seasons.
  • Feeding: Apply balanced organic fertilizer or compost in early spring; supplement mid-summer if growth slows. Avoid over-fertilizing near fruiting time.

Troubleshooting Guide

1) Fruit Splitting

  • Caused by irregular watering or sudden rain.
  • Maintain consistent moisture; use mulch to buffer changes.

2) Leaf Rust or Spotting

  • Common in humid areas late in season.
  • Prune for airflow and remove fallen leaves; avoid overhead watering.

3) Leaf Drop Out of Season

  • Usually from stress: overwatering, drought, or cold snap.
  • Check drainage, adjust watering, and protect from windburn.

4) Cold Damage

  • Tender new growth can burn below 28°F.
  • Mulch heavily and cover young trees during freezes.

🍽 Culinary Inspiration

  • Fresh: Slice over yogurt or drizzle with honey.
  • Preserved: Combine with citrus zest and sugar for bright, pink-hued fig jam.
  • Baked: Roast with butter and cinnamon for a Mediterranean-style dessert.

When will my tree bear fruit?

Generally within 1–2 years in warm climates with full sun.

Can I grow it in a container?

Yes! It thrives in large pots when watered and pruned properly.

Is it normal for leaves to drop?

Yes — figs are deciduous, losing leaves in winter before regrowth each spring.

How do I prevent fruit cracking?

Keep watering consistent and avoid heavy irrigation right before ripening.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.
