🌱 CULTIVAR ORIGIN STORY

Born from innovation and patience, the ‘Fignomenal’ Fig is a patented cultivar developed in 2020 by B&S Plants of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania and propagated through AgriStarts. This unique dwarf variety is a natural sport of the renowned Chicago Hardy fig — combining the same rich fruit quality with a more compact, everbearing habit.

Its name says it all: “Fignomenal” = phenomenal figs in a compact form.

This cultivar revolutionized small-space fruit growing by giving gardeners the chance to enjoy a full harvest from a tree that fits comfortably in a patio pot.

🌿 BEST PRACTICES FOR PLANTING & CARE

Where to Plant:

Choose a sunny, well-draining location — figs love warmth and light. Avoid soggy soils.

Planting Method – “High & Tight”:

Dig a hole just wider than the pot and equal in depth. Place your fig so the soil level matches its container height — never bury the trunk. Backfill firmly, water deeply, and mulch after planting.

Soil Preferences:

Loamy or sandy soils with good drainage (pH 6.0–7.5).

Watering:

💧 In-ground: Deep soak weekly, more during droughts.

💦 Containers: Water daily in summer; allow top inch to dry slightly between waterings.

Fertilization:

Apply compost or organic fertilizer twice yearly — early spring and midsummer. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can reduce fruit set.

Pruning:

✂️ Prune in late winter to shape and improve airflow. Remove dead or crossing branches.

Winter Maintenance (Florida & Beyond):

🍂 Figs are deciduous. Expect seasonal leaf drop — this is natural. In cooler regions, overwinter containers in bright indoor spaces or sheltered areas.

Mulching:

🪵 Add 2–3 inches of hardwood mulch, keeping it away from the trunk. Improves soil life and moisture retention.

🪴 CONTAINER & INDOOR GROWING

  • Container Size: Start in a 3-gallon pot; up-pot to 7–10 gallons as the tree matures.
  • Placement: Full sun outdoors; bright south-facing window indoors.
  • Indoor Fruiting: Possible year-round under consistent light and warmth.
  • Soil Mix: Equal parts peat, perlite, and compost promote healthy roots.

⚠️ CAUTIONS

  • Overwatering can lead to root rot — plant high, never low.
  • Cold snaps may damage young shoots — protect below 30°F.
  • Wildlife (birds, squirrels) enjoy figs too — use netting if needed.

💚 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

⚠️ Issue 🧠 Cause 🌿 Solution
🍂 Yellow or spotted leaves 🧘 Normal seasonal change in Florida 🍃 Figs are deciduous — leaf spotting and drop are natural responses to humidity and dormancy cycles. No treatment required.
💦 Wilting or root stress 🌊 Overwatering or poor drainage 🪣 Improve drainage; plant “high & tight.”
🪲 Sticky residue or curled leaves 🐜 Aphids or scale insects ❄️ Spray with neem oil; 🐞 encourage ladybugs.
❄️ Cold damage 🌬️ Frost or wind exposure 🪵 Mulch roots; cover canopy overnight.
🍈 Fruit drop 🌡️ Weather or watering fluctuations 🌞 Maintain steady moisture & full sun; ✅ recovery expected next flush.

🌟 IS THIS PLANT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Ideal For:

  • Home gardeners wanting to grow edible fruit in small spaces
  • Container gardeners & urban homesteads
  • Permaculture and food forest enthusiasts
  • Florida and Gulf Coast growers

Not Ideal For:

  • Those seeking evergreen ornamental trees or year-round foliage
  • Buyers who prefer a purely decorative patio plant (consider Surinam Cherry, Jaboticaba, or Loquat for evergreen appeal)

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Why are the leaves on my ‘Fignomenal’ Fig turning yellow or dropping?

🍃 Totally normal! Ficus carica is deciduous, so it naturally sheds leaves once or twice a year — especially in Florida’s humid or cool seasons. Expect leaf turnover before a fresh flush of growth.

Q: My fig has spots on the leaves — is it sick?

🧘 No — leaf spotting in Florida is natural and seasonal, caused by humidity and age. As long as new leaves emerge healthy, no treatment is needed.

Q: Will my ‘Fignomenal’ stay green all year?

❌ No — this is not an evergreen ornamental. Figs have a resting period each year. For continuous greenery, consider evergreens like Surinam Cherry, Jaboticaba, or Loquat.

Q: Can I grow it indoors?

✅ Yes! In bright sunlight or under grow lights (8+ hrs daily), it can fruit year-round.

Q: How long until it fruits?

🪴 A 3-gallon plant can begin fruiting within the first year; a 1-gallon plant may take 1–2 years to mature.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
