🌱 CULTIVAR ORIGIN STORY

‘Fignomenal’ is a patented dwarf fig introduced in 2020 after careful selection and tissue culture propagation. The name says it all: phenomenal figs in a small footprint.

🍽 TOP BENEFITS & USES

  • Culinary: Eat fresh, fold into salads and cheese boards, bake into tarts, simmer into jams or compotes, or dehydrate for snackable morsels.
  • Nutrition: Naturally high in fiber, with potassium, magnesium, calcium, and antioxidants.
  • Ornamental + Practical: Bold, lobed leaves and a rounded silhouette make a great edible accent for patios and entryways.
  • Cultural Roots: One of humanity’s oldest cultivated fruits—historically tied to abundance, wisdom, and wellness.

🪴 CONTAINER & INDOOR GROWING (1-GALLON START)

  • Best Use: Begin in the 1-gallon for easy shipping and quick establishment; up-pot to 3–5 gal once roots fill the container, then 7–10 gal for sustained harvests.
  • Soil Mix: Airy and fast-draining—peat/coir + perlite + compost.
  • Light: Full sun outdoors; south-facing window or grow lights (8–12 hrs) indoors.
  • Indoor Fruiting: Achievable with consistent warmth, strong light, and steady moisture.
  • Training: The 1-gallon stage is ideal for shaping a compact, productive structure.

🌿 BEST PRACTICES FOR PLANTING & CARE

Where to Plant:

Choose full sun with excellent drainage. Avoid low spots or standing water.

Planting Method — “High & Tight”:

  • Dig a hole only slightly wider than the pot and no deeper than the root ball.
  • Keep the original soil line level with surrounding grade (never bury the trunk).
  • Backfill firmly with native soil + compost; water to settle.▶️ How we plant fruit trees (video): https://youtu.be/RRQFY30qdA8?si=rRIcsbLlVAVYotfI

Watering:

  • Containers: In warm months, check daily; water when the top 1" is dry.
  • In-ground: Deep soak 1–2×/week, adjusting for rain, heat, and soil type.

Fertilization:

Light, organic feedings in early spring and mid-summer. Too much nitrogen = leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

Pruning:

Late winter shaping; thin crossing branches; maintain good airflow and a compact, easily harvested canopy.

Mulching:

2–3" hardwood mulch to moderate moisture and temperature—do not pile against the trunk.

Seasonal Habits (Florida & Similar Climates):

  • Figs are deciduous. Expect leaf spotting and drop during seasonal transitions—this is normal.
  • Fresh flushes follow as weather stabilizes and day length increases.

⚠️ CAUTIONS

  • Overwatering/poor drainage → root stress. Plant high & tight and prioritize aeration.
  • Cold snaps can singe tender growth; protect when temps dip below 30°F.
  • Wildlife pressure: Birds/squirrels love ripe figs—consider netting.

💚 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

⚠️ Issue 🧠 Cause 🌿 Solution
🍂 Yellow or spotted leaves (FL) 🧘 Seasonal/dormancy cycle; humidity shifts 🍃 Normal for deciduous figs—new flush will follow. No treatment required.
💧 Wilting, droop, slow growth 💦 Overwatering or heavy soil 🪣 Improve drainage; allow top inch to dry; up-pot to a lighter mix if needed.
🪲 Sticky residue, curled leaves 🐜 Aphids/scale ❄️ Neem/organic soap; 🐞 encourage beneficials; improve airflow.
❄️ Cold damage 🌬️ Frost + wind 🪵 Mulch roots; cover canopy; move containers to shelter.
🍈 Fruit drop 🌡️ Heat swings or irregular watering 🌞 Maintain full sun and steady moisture; ✅ recovery on next flush.

🌟 IS THIS PLANT RIGHT FOR YOU?

✅ Ideal For:

  • Gardeners seeking edible production in small spaces
  • Container growers and urban homesteads
  • Florida and Gulf Coast climates (with seasonal expectations)
  • Hands-on growers who enjoy shaping a tree from a young start

❌ Not Ideal For:

  • Shoppers wanting evergreen ornamentals or year-round perfect foliage
  • Purely decorative patio trees (consider Surinam Cherry, Jaboticaba, Loquat for evergreen appeal)

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long until my 1-gallon ‘Fignomenal’ fruits?

🪴 Plan for 1–2 years to reach consistent fruiting, faster with strong sun, proper up-potting, and balanced feeding.

Why are my fig leaves turning yellow or dropping?

🍃 Normal! Figs are deciduous. Seasonal leaf turnover (often with spots first) is expected—especially in Florida’s humidity cycles.

Can I keep it indoors year-round?

✅ Yes—if you provide bright light (south window or grow lights 8–12 hrs), consistent warmth, and good airflow. Indoor fruiting is possible.

Do I need another fig for pollination?

No—‘Fignomenal’ is self-fertile.

🌿 COMPANION PLANTS FOR ‘FIGNOMENAL’ FIG

Design a thriving edible ecosystem around your fig tree! Companion plants build soil fertility, regulate moisture, and attract beneficial insects — the essentials for long-term productivity.

🌾 Soil Builders & Mulch Crops

Healthy chop-and-drop systems need both nitrogen and carbon sources for balanced decomposition. Pair fast-growing nitrogen fixers with hardy clumping grasses to build long-term soil structure.

  • Perennial Peanut (Arachis glabrata) – Living nitrogen-fixing groundcover that suppresses weeds and feeds soil microbes.
  • Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) – A dynamic accumulator loaded with potassium and calcium; cut back regularly and drop the foliage as nutrient-rich mulch.
  • Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) – Dense clumping carbon source that pairs perfectly with Mexican Sunflower for a complete mulch cycle. Its deep roots stabilize soil and improve drainage.

💡 Tip: Combine Perennial Peanut + Mexican Sunflower + Vetiver Grass for the ultimate regenerative mulch system — nitrogen, carbon, and minerals in harmony.

🌸 Pollinator & Beneficial Insect Attractors

  • Blue Porterweed (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis) – Beloved by butterflies and hummingbirds; blooms nearly year-round.
  • Chapman’s Goldenrod (Solidago odora var. chapmanii) – A native Florida late-season nectar plant for pollinators.
  • Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) – Fragrant edible leaves and scarlet flowers that attract hummingbirds and beneficial insects.

Edible Companions

  • Chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) – Perennial leafy green rich in nutrients; excellent vertical complement to figs.
  • Nopales / Edible Prickly Pear (Opuntia cochenillifera) – Drought-tolerant cactus producing edible pads and occasional fruit; ideal for dry, sunny borders.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region
