🌞 Best Practices for Planting & Care
Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, well-drained location. Figs prefer sandy or loamy soils with good airflow. Avoid low areas prone to standing water.
Planting Method:
- Dig a hole just wider than the pot and no deeper.
- Plant “high & tight”—keep the root crown slightly above ground level.
- Backfill firmly with native soil and top-dress with compost.
- Add hardwood mulch 2–4 inches thick, but keep it away from the trunk.

Watering:
- Daily the first week, 2–3× per week for the first two months.
- Weekly deep watering once established.
- Increase frequency during fruit set and heat waves.
Feeding:
Use light, organic fertilizers or compost teas early in the growing season. Avoid excess nitrogen—too much leaf growth reduces fruit production.
Mulching:
Mulch with hardwood chips, leaves, or pine straw. Reapply annually for moisture retention and nematode control.
🍂 Seasonal Habits
Spring (Florida): Rapid leaf-out after dormancy; prune lightly before new growth.
Summer: Fruit set; maintain watering; watch for rust (normal in humidity).
Fall: Harvest ends; tree begins to harden off.
Winter: Deciduous—leaves yellow, spot, and drop completely. This is normal! The plant rests before the next spring flush.
Outside Florida:
In cooler zones, expect slower early growth and later fruiting. In arid regions, fruit may dry faster and become more intense in flavor. Protect from extreme frost below 15 °F.
✂️ Pruning & Training
- Encourage a multi-stem bush form for cold recovery and easy harvest.
- Thin crowded branches to improve airflow.
- Best pruning window: late winter after risk of frost or right after harvest.
- Remove suckers and deadwood each year.
💧 Watering, Fertilizing & Mulch Schedule
| Season | Action |
|---|---|
| Spring | Begin light fertilization; ensure deep weekly watering. |
| Summer | Maintain soil moisture; apply compost tea or organic potassium supplement to aid fruiting. |
| Fall | Stop feeding; allow tree to harden for winter. |
| Winter | Minimal watering while dormant. |
🦠 Troubleshooting Guide
| Issue | Symptoms | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Fig Rust | Yellow spots → brown undersides → early leaf drop | Rake fallen leaves, prune for airflow, avoid overhead watering. Tree rebounds naturally. |
| Souring/Splitting Fruit | Rain close to ripening causes cracking | Harvest promptly when soft; the small eye helps prevent souring. |
| Root-knot Nematodes | Poor vigor, stunted roots in sandy soil | Add compost, mulch deeply, plant vetiver or marigolds nearby. |
| Mosaic Virus (Cosmetic) | Mottled leaves, no real damage | Maintain good nutrition and avoid stress. |
| Pests (Birds, Squirrels) | Missing fruit | Use fruit bags or lightweight netting. |
Florida Fig Troubleshooting Quick Guide
🌦 Rainy Season Splits? – Harvest early at softness; avoid over-watering.
🍂 Yellow Leaves Mid-Summer? – Likely rust; normal and recoverable.
🌳 Sparse Fruit? – Too much nitrogen or not enough full sun.
🪴 Potted Tree Drying Out Fast? – Upgrade container or add mulch layer.
🪰 Ants on Fruit? – They follow nectar leaks; pick fruit slightly early.
🪴 Container & Indoor Growing
- Choose 15–25 gal containers or larger.
- Use a well-draining soil blend with pine bark and perlite.
- Full sun exposure is essential for fruiting.
- In cooler climates, overwinter dormant potted figs in garages or porches.
🌼 Companion & Support Plants
Soil Builders: Vetiver Grass, Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), Pigeon Pea, Comfrey.
Pollinator Companions: African Blue Basil, Sweet Almond Bush, Native Salvias.
Aesthetic Pairings: Olive, Rosemary, Pineapple Guava, and Surinam Cherry for texture and contrast.
⚠️ Cautions
- Fig latex can irritate skin—wear gloves while pruning.
- Avoid planting where roots may contact septic systems; figs are vigorous rooters.
- Protect new shoots from frost during first winters.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS
Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.
Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.
If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.
⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS
All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.
📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.
🚚 Typical Transit Times:
-
Florida: 1–2 days
-
Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days
-
Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days
Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.
Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.
🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK
Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.
We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.
Customers are responsible for:
-
Monitoring tracking information sent via email
-
Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery
-
Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions
During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.
Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:
-
Weather-related damage
-
Carrier delays
