Konasu Eggplant – Tiny Japanese Heirloom Eggplants with Gourmet Flavor 🍆

Imagine harvesting dozens of glossy, jewel-like eggplants from a single compact plant—each one perfectly sized for grilling, roasting, pickling, or tossing straight into your favorite stir-fry. Konasu Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Konasu') is a unique Japanese heirloom that combines ornamental beauty with exceptional culinary value, making it one of the most rewarding warm-season vegetables for home gardeners.

Our current crop was started from seed approximately one month ago and is rapidly approaching transplant size. Under ideal growing conditions, many gardeners can begin harvesting fruit in as little as 4–8 weeks after transplanting.

Limited-Time Seasonal Availability

Unlike fruit trees and perennial crops that remain in production year-round, Konasu Eggplant is a fast-growing seasonal crop.

🌱 These plants are currently being offered at an ideal transplant size and price point.

⚠️ As long-lived annuals, they will not remain available in this size for long. As the season progresses, plants will either be transplanted into larger containers, sold through our retail nursery, or moved into production areas.

If you've been thinking about adding productive vegetables to your garden this season, now is the ideal time to get them established.

🇯🇵 The Story Behind Konasu

In Japanese, "Ko" means small and "Nasu" means eggplant, making Konasu literally the "small eggplant."

While many gardeners recognize the long, slender Japanese eggplants commonly found in grocery stores, Konasu represents a traditional miniature type prized for its tender flesh, attractive appearance, and versatility in the kitchen.

The fruits develop a beautiful deep purple-black skin that almost resembles polished obsidian. Combined with their compact size, they have become a favorite among home gardeners and chefs seeking something unique.

🍆 Fruit Characteristics

Konasu produces small, rounded fruits with a striking appearance.

Appearance

🖤 Nearly black glossy skin

🤍 Creamy white flesh

🌿 Dark purple calyx

🍆 Bite-sized rounded fruit

Flavor Profile

Compared to larger globe eggplants:

✅ Less bitter

✅ Fewer seeds

✅ Tender texture

✅ Thin edible skin

✅ Mild, slightly sweet flavor

Because the fruits are harvested young, they maintain exceptional tenderness and rarely develop the toughness often associated with larger eggplant varieties.

Why Grow Konasu Eggplant?

For GreenDreams growers, the most important question is:

"What can I do with it?"

The answer is: quite a lot.

Culinary Uses

🍆 Stir-fries

🍛 Japanese curry

🥢 Soy-glazed eggplant

🍢 Grilled skewers

🫙 Pickling

🍜 Noodle dishes

🥗 Roasted vegetable medleys

🍽 Whole stuffed mini eggplants

Because of their small size and tender skin, Konasu fruits often require less preparation than larger eggplant varieties.

🍆 Recipe Spotlight: Crispy Roasted Konasu Eggplant Bites

One of the best features of Konasu Eggplant is its naturally small size. Unlike larger eggplants that require peeling, salting, or extensive preparation, Konasu can often be harvested, rinsed, and cooked whole or halved.

Ingredients

  • 10–15 Konasu Eggplants
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Fresh cracked pepper
  • Optional: Parmesan cheese, fresh basil, or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Slice Konasu eggplants in half.
  3. Toss with olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  4. Arrange cut-side down on a baking sheet.
  5. Roast for 15–20 minutes until tender and lightly caramelized.
  6. Finish with fresh herbs or Parmesan cheese.

✅ Uses freshly harvested fruit

✅ Ready in under 30 minutes

✅ No peeling required

✅ Highlights Konasu's tender texture

✅ Kid-friendly

✅ Works as a side dish, appetizer, or topping for rice bowls

The naturally mild flavor and creamy flesh make Konasu one of the easiest eggplants to introduce to people who think they "don't like eggplant."

🍽 5 Delicious Ways to Use Konasu Eggplant

Many gardeners ask, "What do I actually do with all these eggplants?"

Konasu's small size makes it one of the most versatile eggplants you can grow.

1️⃣ Roast Whole

Toss with olive oil and roast until tender.

2️⃣ Stir-Fry

Perfect for quick Asian-inspired dishes and noodle bowls.

3️⃣ Pickle

A traditional use for many small Japanese eggplants.

4️⃣ Grill

Slice in half and grill alongside peppers, onions, and summer squash.

5️⃣ Add to Curry

Excellent in coconut curries, vegetable stews, and Mediterranean dishes.

💡 GreenDreams Tip: Harvest fruits while they are still glossy and tender. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue flowering and producing throughout the season.

🚀 Skip the Slow Part

Growing eggplants from seed takes time, warmth, and patience.

By purchasing established starter plants, you can:

✅ Harvest sooner

✅ Reduce seedling losses

✅ Enjoy faster fruit production

✅ Avoid indoor seed-starting equipment

✅ Get a head start on the growing season

Many gardeners purchasing these plants today will be harvesting before seed-started crops have fully caught up.

🌎 Growing Konasu Eggplant in Florida & the Southern United States

Konasu Eggplant thrives throughout Florida and much of the southern United States, including Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and other warm-climate regions.

As a heat-loving crop, Konasu performs best when daytime temperatures remain between 75–95°F and can produce continuously for months under favorable conditions.

Region Best Planting Window Peak Harvest Season
South Florida (Zones 10–11) September–February Winter–Spring
Central Florida (Zone 9) February–April & August–September Spring–Summer & Fall
North Florida & Southern Zone 8–9 States March–May Summer–Early Fall

🍆 What to Expect Throughout the Season

🌱 Weeks 1–3: Root establishment and rapid vegetative growth

🌸 Weeks 4–8: Flowering begins and young fruits start forming

🍆 Weeks 8+: Heavy harvest period begins

🌿 Throughout Warm Weather: Continued flowering and fruit production when harvested regularly

☀️ Summer Performance

Konasu is exceptionally well-suited to hot southern summers and often produces when many cool-season vegetables have already declined.

For best results:

✅ Plant in full sun

✅ Water consistently

✅ Mulch heavily with organic material

✅ Harvest fruits while young and glossy

✅ Feed regularly with compost and organic fertilizer

❄️ Winter & Frost Considerations

Konasu Eggplant is frost-sensitive.

  • Growth slows below 60°F
  • Flowering decreases below 55°F
  • Frost may damage plants
  • Hard freezes typically end the season

Most growers treat Konasu as a warm-season annual, though South Florida gardeners may enjoy an extended growing season during mild winters.

💡 GreenDreams Tip: Because these plants are already established and nearly ready for transplanting, many growers can begin harvesting significantly sooner than if starting from seed, making them an excellent option for maximizing this growing season's production. 🍆🌿

This version gives customers the information they actually need without becoming a giant wall of text.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery

Upon purchase, customers assume full responsibility for the ongoing care and success of their plants.
