🌍 Origin Story: The Rise of CMC40

CMC40 comes from the Colombia Manihot Collection (CMC) developed through international cassava breeding efforts aimed at improving yield, reducing cyanogenic content, and increasing disease resistance.

Institutions such as the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) recognized that cassava was a “survival crop” for millions worldwide — but older landraces were unpredictable. The CMC series sought to change that. CMC40 became one of the standout selections for:

  • High root production
  • Sweet-type flesh with lower natural cyanide levels
  • Better processing qualities

CMC40 quickly spread across tropical and subtropical regions, becoming a go-to staple crop for growers needing food security, resilience, and reliable performance.

🍽️ Culinary Delights & Safe Preparation

Cassava fuels cultures around the world — but with one essential rule:

⚠️ NEVER eat cassava raw. Always peel & cook thoroughly.

All cassava varieties (including sweet types like CMC40) contain cyanogenic glucosides. Proper preparation neutralizes these compounds completely.

✔️ Safe Preparation Guide

  1. Peel the brown skin and pink inner layer
  2. Cut into chunks
  3. Boil for 15–20 minutes until fork-tender
  4. Drain well
  5. From here, enjoy it in countless ways:

🌟 Popular Dishes:

  • Cassava Fries – crispy outside, pillowy inside
  • Cassava Bread / Yuca Bread – gluten-free & naturally chewy
  • Cassava Cake – beloved in Asian & Caribbean kitchens
  • Casabe – ancestral flatbread of Indigenous Americans
  • Stews & Soups – thickens broth, adds nutrition
  • Tapioca (from cassava starch) – pearls for pudding & bubble tea

CMC40 has a fine-grained texture, making it ideal for frying, boiling, mashing, and baking.

🌿 Seasonal Habits in Florida

  • Spring: Rapid flush of new growth; plant cuttings root easily
  • Summer: Heavy vegetative growth + tuber formation
  • Fall: Slight slowdown; excellent time to plant
  • Winter: Top may die back in frost; roots survive and resprout in spring

Cassava is not deciduous, but frost can defoliate it, which is normal. It regrows vigorously with warmer weather.

🌱 Best Practices for Planting & Care — CMC40 Cassava

(Following GreenDreams organic principles — see SOP )

🌞 Where to Plant CMC40

  • Full sun preferred (6–8+ hours)
  • Accepts light shade
  • Avoid low-lying wet zones
  • Excellent in sandy, rocky, or poor soil
  • Ideal for food forests, row plantings, and regenerative systems

🌿 Soil Requirements

Cassava thrives in:

  • Poor soil
  • Dry or sandy soil
  • Alkaline soil
  • Rocky soil

Avoid:

  • Waterlogged soils
  • Heavy clay unless amended

🌱 How to Plant CMC40 Cassava

Keep plants in their container until they produce new growth after shipping.

This reduces transplant shock dramatically.

When ready to plant:

1. Dig a hole only slightly wider than the pot

  • Plant at the same depth as it was in the container.
  • DO NOT bury the stem.

2. Use the High & Tight Method

3. Backfill with

  • Native soil
  • Optional: compost, biochar, azomite
  • Keep mulch away from the stem to prevent rot

💧 Watering (In-Ground vs Container)

In Containers:

  • Water daily during warm/hot months
  • Reduce watering during cool seasons
  • Ensure drainage holes are open

In Ground:

  • Water 2–3x weekly during establishment
  • After 8–12 weeks, cassava becomes highly drought tolerant
  • Avoid overwatering — root rot can occur

✂️ Pruning CMC40

  • Prune to maintain 4–6 ft height
  • Encourages thicker stems & higher yield
  • Remove lower branches to improve air flow
  • Use pruned stems (“stakes”) to plant more cassava!

🌿 Propagation & Multiplying Your CMC40 Cassava — Turn One Plant Into Many

One of the most powerful qualities of cassava is its ability to propagate easily from stem cuttings, known as stakes. With proper technique, a single CMC40 plant can become dozens — even hundreds — of plants over time, turning one purchase into a self-sustaining, high-yield starch crop for years to come.

🌱 What Makes Cassava So Easy to Multiply?

Cassava does not rely on seeds for reproduction. Instead, new plants grow from hardened sections of mature stems (8–12 months old). These canes contain nodes — small bumps or rings along the stem where new roots and shoots emerge.

A good cutting (“stake”) is:

  • 6–10 inches long
  • About the thickness of a thumb or larger
  • Firm, mature, and disease-free
  • Containing 3–6 nodes
  • Brownish-green and not green-soft or overly woody

🌿 Method 1: Upright Planting (Most Common in Florida & the Southeast)

This is the method used by many GreenDreams associates and growers across the Southeastern US.

🌟 How to Do It

  1. Place the cutting vertically into the soil.
  2. Ensure 1–2 nodes are buried and at least 1 node remains above the soil line.
  3. Orientation matters:
    • The base is usually slightly thicker and more mature.
    • Nodes often angle slightly upward — pointing you toward the correct “up” direction.
  4. Plant 2–4 inches deep.
  5. Water deeply for 2–3 weeks while roots establish.

Best For:

  • Production rows
  • Food forests
  • Areas with good drainage
  • Growers who want straight, upright plants for easy harvest

🌿 Method 2: Horizontal Planting (Great for Loose or Sandy Soil)

Some traditional growers prefer this technique for maximizing rooting potential.

🌟 How to Do It

  1. Lay the cutting flat, 2–3 inches beneath the soil.
  2. Cover lightly.
  3. Water thoroughly.

Because every node can sprout when laid horizontally, this method can produce multiple shoots from a single cutting, creating thicker clumps and more biomass.

Best For:

  • Sandy soil
  • Food forest polycultures
  • High-volume plantings
  • Growers who want increased drought tolerance

🌿 Production Potential — How One Plant Becomes a Field

CMC40 cassava is a regenerative powerhouse.

Year 1

Start with one 1-gallon plant.

By harvest season, you’ll have multiple mature stems that can each become a new plant.

Year 2

Those stems can produce 20–40 new stakes, depending on growth vigor and pruning.

Year 3

With continued propagation, you can create hundreds of cassava plants, producing substantial carbohydrate yields for home use or small-scale production.

🌱 A single cassava plant can eventually provide:

  • A reliable source of starch and calories
  • Enough planting material to sustain an expanding food forest
  • A regenerative crop requiring minimal inputs

This is why cassava is considered one of the most important global food security crops.

🌿 Use in Regenerative & Production Systems

Cassava works beautifully in:

  • Rotation or alley-cropping
  • Food forests
  • Regenerative agriculture beds
  • Low-input, off-grid farming systems

Paired with support plants such as:

  • Mexican sunflower (biomass)
  • Lemongrass (wind buffer & mulch)
  • Pigeon pea (nitrogen fixer)
  • Sweet potato (groundcover)
  • Banana & papaya (microclimate creation)

Cassava contributes to:

  • Increased soil organic matter
  • Mulch and biomass generation
  • Shade and wind buffering
  • Long-term carbohydrate production

❄️ Winter Care (Florida & Similar Zones)

  • Frost may defoliate the plant (normal)
  • Mulch roots heavily
  • Plant will resprout in spring
  • In colder regions (<Zone 8b), grow in large containers & overwinter indoors

🛑 Cautions — Read Before Eating

Cassava contains naturally occurring cyanogenic glucosides.

⚠️ NEVER eat cassava raw.

⚠️ ALWAYS peel and cook thoroughly.

⚠️ Do not feed uncooked cassava to animals.

Cooking neutralizes cyanide compounds and is the traditional, safe method used across the world for thousands of years.
