🍒 Dwarf Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra)

Compact Acerola with Sculptural Form & Nutrient-Dense Fruit

Some plants are grown for flavor.

Some are grown for structure.

This one does both — in a refined, compact package.

The Dwarf Barbados Cherry is a naturally tight-growing selection of Malpighia glabra that offers glossy evergreen foliage, delicate pink blooms, and clusters of vibrant red fruit — all on a plant that stays beautifully manageable.

It is architectural.

It is container-friendly.

It is nutritionally powerful.

And it fits where other tropical fruit shrubs simply won’t.

🍈 Fruit Profile – Small but Mighty

This dwarf selection produces smaller fruit (½–¾ inch diameter) with:

  • Bright red skin
  • Tender, juicy flesh
  • 2–3 small seeds
  • Mild sweet-tart character

Let’s be clear and transparent:

The flavor is lighter and less sweet than larger acerola selections. It is refreshing and mildly tart rather than intensely tropical.

However, it retains the nutritional signature that made acerola globally famous.

🍊 Nutritional & Industry Value

Acerola is widely documented as one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C among fruit crops.

Published research reports:

  • 1,000–3,000 mg Vitamin C per 100g fresh fruit (varies by maturity)
  • High antioxidant content
  • Natural flavonoids and carotenoids

Used commercially for:

  • Vitamin C extraction
  • Nutraceutical capsules & powders
  • Functional beverages
  • Cosmetic antioxidant formulations

Even in dwarf form, it remains nutritionally dense.

🥤 Culinary Applications

While milder in flavor, this fruit still performs beautifully when used creatively.

Best Uses

  • Smoothies
  • Blended juices
  • Immune shots
  • Fresh pulp added to sauces
  • Vitamin-rich frozen cubes
  • Jam & preserves (often combined with sweeter fruits)

In Caribbean and Brazilian traditions, acerola juice is consumed fresh, often blended with honey or other tropical fruits to balance tartness.

Origin Story

Native to the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America, Malpighia glabra became globally cultivated in the 20th century when Brazilian agricultural research institutions identified its exceptional Vitamin C content.

Dwarf selections were later propagated for:

  • Urban gardens
  • Patio production
  • Ornamental edible landscapes
  • Specialty container cultivation

The result is a refined, smaller-scale tropical fruit shrub suited for modern landscapes.

🌿 Ornamental & Architectural Appeal

This plant truly shines as a design element.

  • Glossy evergreen foliage
  • Soft pink blooms 🌸
  • Clusters of jewel-red fruit 🍒
  • Slightly cascading branch tips
  • Naturally rounded, compact canopy

It integrates beautifully into:

  • Courtyard gardens
  • Tropical patio containers
  • Poolside landscapes
  • Understory food forest layers
  • Low edible hedges

When flowering and fruiting simultaneously, it becomes a conversation piece.

🌞 Seasonal Behavior (Florida Focus)

Spring: Vigorous flush and first bloom

Summer: Heavy fruit cycles

Fall: Continued flowering in warm conditions

Winter: Evergreen unless frost-damaged

🍃 Minor leaf yellowing during cool weather is normal.

❄️ Frost exposure may cause leaf drop, but recovery is common if wood remains undamaged.

❄️ Cold & Frost Management

Dwarf Barbados Cherry is frost sensitive.

  • Leaf damage below 30°F
  • Structural damage below 28°F
  • Young plants more vulnerable

Recommended Strategy for Frost-Prone Regions

🪴 Grow in container

🪴 Move into garage or protected patio during freeze events

🪴 Return outdoors when temperatures stabilize above 40°F

Container culture is strongly recommended outside frost-free zones.

🪴 Container Growing Excellence

This selection excels in pots.

Pot Progression

4” → 1 gallon → 3 gallon → 5–7 gallon patio container

Placement

  • Full sun exposure
  • Southern or western orientation
  • Avoid cold wind corridors

Watering

  • Daily during hot months
  • Excellent drainage required
  • Avoid waterlogged roots

🌳 In-Ground Planting & Orchard Strategy

For landscape planting:

  • Space 3–5 ft apart
  • Use drip irrigation
  • Maintain airflow
  • Light shaping after fruit cycles

Suitable for small-scale specialty production but primarily valued for ornamental-edible balance.

🌱 Best Practices for Planting & Care – Malpighia glabra

After Shipping

Allow Dwarf Barbados Cherry to remain in its original container for 30 days or until new growth appears before transplanting.

Best time to transplant: when roots begin filling container.

High & Tight Planting Method

When planting Dwarf Barbados Cherry:

  1. Dig hole slightly wider than container.
  2. Plant at same depth — never bury trunk.
  3. Firm soil tightly around root ball.
  4. Top dress with compost + biochar + azomite.
  5. Mulch 2–3 inches deep — keep mulch away from woody base.

  • 3–4 applications per year
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen
  • Micronutrient support if leaves pale

Pruning

✂️ Light shaping after major fruit flush

✂️ Remove crossing or inward branches

✂️ Maintain airflow

Heavy structural pruning rarely required.

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.

🌡️ EXTREME WEATHER & SEASONAL RISK

Live plants are sensitive to temperature extremes.

We cannot guarantee plant condition during periods of extreme summer heat or winter cold and freezing temperatures. Weather-related delays, carrier interruptions, or exposure during delivery are beyond our control.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Monitoring tracking information sent via email

  • Retrieving packages promptly upon delivery

  • Preventing plants from being left outdoors in extreme conditions

During unsafe weather, holiday shipping volume, or extended transit risk, orders may be held and shipped the following week to protect plant health.

⚠️ CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITY & REFUND POLICY

By purchasing live plants, customers acknowledge and accept the risks associated with shipping, weather exposure, transit delays, and regional suitability.

Refunds or replacements are considered only under exceptional circumstances and in accordance with our return and refund policy. We are not responsible for:

  • Weather-related damage

  • Carrier delays

  • Poor plant selection for a given climate or region

  • Improper care after delivery
