‘Wurtz’ (often sold as Little Cado) is the go-to avocado for patios, courtyards, and backyard growers who want real fruit without committing to a 30-foot tree. 🍐 Fruit & Harvest Details

What the fruit is like 🥑

  • Appearance: Classic green avocado look; medium-sized fruit
  • Flavor & Texture: Creamy, smooth, mild-to-rich depending on maturity; excellent “everyday avocado”
  • Yield & Habit: Can be very productive for its size once established
  • Handling note: Smaller trees can still carry heavy crops—support and pruning matter

Harvest window (typical)

One of the best perks: it can produce over a long season in warm climates.

Region Common Harvest Window (Typical)
Florida (Central/South) Late spring through summer (often May–Sep; varies by year)
Texas / Warm Gulf Summer (site dependent)
California (mild areas) Spring–summer potential depending on climate

Pro harvesting tip: Avocados generally do not ripen on the tree. Pick mature fruit and ripen indoors until it softens.

🌿 Why Grow ‘Wurtz’ (Little Cado)?

This cultivar is all about maximum harvest per square foot.

  • Naturally dwarf: Doesn’t demand a huge yard
  • Container champion: One of the best avocados for pots and patios
  • High “home orchard” value: Great gateway avocado for new growers
  • Easy to prune: Holds a compact, pickable canopy with light annual cuts
  • Edible landscaping dream: Looks clean, evergreen, and intentional

🌿 Origin & Name Story (Short + Fun)

‘Wurtz’ became widely known under the nickname “Little Cado” because it offers the avocado experience—fruit, shade, evergreen canopy—without the giant tree footprint. It’s basically the cultivar that said: “Let’s make avocado practical.” 🌿🥑

🏡 ALSO AVAILABLE IN LARGER SIZES + PICKUP-ONLY OPTIONS

We carry ‘Wurtz’ and many other avocado cultivars at our Spring Hill nursery—often including larger container sizes that establish faster and can fruit sooner (seasonal availability).

Larger sizes may include (pickup-only):

  • 7-gallon
  • 15-gallon
  • Specimen / patio-ready trees

🌿 And yes—our retail nursery carries countless plants not listed online, including limited releases, seasonal inventory, and rarities that are only available for local pickup.

📍 Where to Plant ‘Wurtz’ Avocado

Best location (Florida + Gulf Coast optimized)

  • Full sun
  • Fast-draining soil
  • Good airflow (helps in humid climates)

✅ In Florida and humid regions: plant on a 2–3 ft mound to keep roots oxygenated and reduce root-rot risk.

Avoid

  • Standing water, low spots, heavy clay without drainage improvements
  • Deep shade (reduces flowering and fruit set)
  • Overhead watering that keeps foliage wet

Wind + salt notes (important for Florida)

  • Wind: Smaller trees are easier to protect. Use a sheltered microclimate during the first year and stake if the trunk rocks.
  • Salt: Avocados are generally salt sensitive—avoid salty irrigation and direct coastal salt spray if possible.

🌱 IMPORTANT: Let Your Tree Recover Before Transplanting

After delivery or pickup, keep your ‘Wurtz’ Avocado in its current container and wait ~30 days or until you see fresh new growth before transplanting. This reduces shock and improves establishment success—especially for container-grown trees.

🌱 GreenDreams “High & Tight” Planting Method (Best for Avocados)

Avocado roots need oxygen—planting too deep is the #1 killer.

  1. Dig a hole only slightly wider than the container and no deeper than the root ball
  2. Set the root flare at or slightly above soil level
  3. Backfill with native soil and pack firmly to remove air pockets
  4. Water deeply to settle
  5. Apply 2–4 inches of mulch around the drip line—keep mulch off the trunk
  6. Top dress with compost + biochar + azomite for biology + minerals

💧 Watering, Feeding & Pruning (Container-Friendly + Pro-Level)

Watering (container vs in-ground)

While in a pot (3-gal):

  • Expect daily watering in warm weather (pots dry fast)
  • Water deeply until it runs out the bottom, then allow slight dry-down before the next watering
  • If the pot stays wet for days, drainage is too slow (adjust soil mix)

After planting in-ground:

  • Week 1: water daily
  • Weeks 2–4: every 2–3 days
  • After month 1: deep weekly watering, adjusting for rainfall and soil type

✅ Drip irrigation > overhead spray.

Fertilizing

  • Avocados prefer light, frequent organic feeding
  • Container trees benefit from gentle, consistent nutrition—avoid heavy applications
  • Build the soil: compost top-dress + mulch + minerals

Pruning (this is where ‘Wurtz’ shines) ✂️

  • Maintain 6–10 ft for patio size
  • Tip-prune new growth to encourage branching and keep canopy dense
  • Remove crossing branches and open the center for airflow
  • If fruit load bends branches, prune for structure and consider temporary support

Winter care (especially 8b/9a and cold events)

  • Container growing makes cold protection easier: move under cover, garage edge, or protected patio
  • Water the day before cold events
  • Mulch the soil surface (keep mulch off trunk)
  • Use frost cloth on cold nights

🍃 Seasonal Habits (Florida + Similar Climates)

‘Wurtz’ is evergreen, but seasonal rhythms still happen:

  • Spring: bloom + new flush; older leaves may shed as new growth pushes
  • Summer: active growth + fruit development; monitor watering closely
  • Fall: growth slows; prepare for cold events in marginal zones
  • Winter: slowed growth; cold snaps can scorch leaves—protect young trees

🪴 Container Growing (This Is the Star Feature)

If you’re shopping for a true patio avocado, this is the one.

Recommended long-term container: 15–25 gallon

Soil blend: compost + pine bark fines + coarse sand (fast drainage is non-negotiable)

Sun: full sun outdoors

Container placement: avoid hot concrete corners that reflect heat all day; morning sun + airflow is ideal

Up-potting schedule: move up as roots fill the pot and watering frequency becomes extreme

When to up-pot or transplant

  • When the rootball fills the pot and dries too quickly
  • When roots start circling heavily or pushing out drainage holes
  • Best time: warm season growth window
  • Always use “High & Tight” principles when transplanting

🥑 Culinary Uses (Why You Grow It)

‘Wurtz’ is the perfect “grab one and go” avocado for daily eating.

Favorite ways to use it 🍽️

  • Guacamole (fresh, simple, always a win)
  • Avocado toast with citrus + salt + herbs
  • Salads and bowls for creamy fat balance
  • Smoothies for texture and richness
  • Mash spread: avocado + lime + garlic + salt = instant staple

✅ If you want reliable homegrown healthy fats in a small space, this cultivar delivers.

🌾 Orchard & Large-Scale Strategy

‘Wurtz’ is mainly a home orchard / small-space cultivar. For production orchards, larger canopy cultivars usually dominate, but ‘Wurtz’ can be useful in:

  • High-density edible landscaping
  • Small mixed blocks where pickability and compact growth matter
  • Patio tree programs and container production systems

In-ground spacing (managed): 8–12 ft depending on pruning intensity.

🌼 Companion Plant Sidebar (Curated from GreenDreams Inventory)

Nitrogen fixers (soil builders):

  • Pigeon Pea (Cajanus cajan)
  • Perennial Peanut (Arachis glabrata)
  • Sunn Hemp (Crotalaria juncea)

Pollinator magnets (better fruit set):

  • Firebush (Hamelia patens)
  • Porterweed (Stachytarpheta spp.)
  • African Blue Basil

Dynamic accumulators / aesthetic companions:

  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
  • Gingers
  • Fakahatchee Grass (Tripsacum dactyloides)

🔍 Troubleshooting Guide — ‘Wurtz’ Avocado

🔍 Issue 🧠 Likely Cause ✅ Organic Fix
🍂 Yellowing leaves Overwatering / poor drainage Improve drainage, plant high, allow slight dry-down
🪲 Bronzed/speckled leaves Lace bug / mites Organic soap/horticultural oil; encourage beneficials
❄️ Leaf burn after cold Frost + wind exposure Frost cloth, water before cold, protected placement
🍃 Fruit drop Low pollination / bloom weather swings Add Type B partner; add pollinator plants
💧 Root rot decline Standing water / deep planting High & Tight planting + fast drainage + careful irrigation
🪴 Pot dries constantly Rootbound container Up-pot to 15–25 gal; refresh soil; mulch surface

❓ FAQ (High-Intent Search Questions)

Is ‘Wurtz’ (Little Cado) a true dwarf avocado tree?

It’s one of the most reliable naturally compact avocado cultivars, typically staying much smaller than standard trees—especially with light pruning.

Can ‘Wurtz’ avocado grow in a pot long-term?

Yes. It’s one of the best cultivars for container growing when planted in a fast-draining mix and kept on a consistent watering routine.

Does ‘Wurtz’ need another avocado tree?

It can fruit alone (Type A), but production often improves with a nearby Type B variety.

How long until it fruits?

Grafted avocados often begin producing in ~2–4 years in-ground with good care (sometimes sooner with larger nursery stock and ideal conditions).

What’s the #1 mistake with container avocados?

Overwatering in a pot with slow drainage. Avocados need oxygen at the roots—fast drainage is everything.

⚠️ Cautions

  • Do not bury the trunk (crown rot risk)
  • Avoid waterlogged soil and salty irrigation
  • Container trees can dry quickly—monitor daily in warm weather
  • Keep mulch off the trunk to prevent rot
  • Young trees need frost protection until established

🌟 Is This Plant For Me?

✅ Ideal for:

  • Patio growers, small yards, courtyards, and HOA-friendly landscapes
  • Growers in Zones 9–11 (and 8b/9a with container protection + microclimate)
  • Anyone who wants a productive avocado tree that stays pickable
  • Container gardeners who want real fruit (not just a decorative plant)

❌ Not ideal for:

  • Sites that stay wet without drainage improvements
  • Direct coastal salt spray zones or salty irrigation water
  • Growers who want massive orchard-sized trees without pruning
  • Areas below Zone 8b without serious freeze protection

🚚 LIVE PLANT SHIPPING & TRANSIT EXPECTATIONS

Live plants naturally experience stress during shipping. Temporary leaf drop, mild wilting, or cosmetic stress is normal after transit. Most plants recover quickly with proper watering, gradual light exposure, and basic aftercare. Some plants may require additional attention during the first few weeks.

Despite careful packing, minor cosmetic damage may occur during transit. Small issues such as broken leaves or stems typically resolve with time and proper care.

If your shipping box arrives with significant external damage, please contact UPS within 30 days to initiate a carrier claim.

⏱️ SHIPPING METHOD, TIMING & TRANSIT WINDOWS

All online orders ship via UPS Ground from our Central Florida nursery.

📦 Shipping Schedule: Orders ship once weekly on Mondays to reduce the risk of packages sitting in transit over weekends. A countdown clock on our website displays the next shipping date.

🚚 Typical Transit Times:
  • Florida: 1–2 days

  • Southern U.S.: approximately 2 days

  • Midwest, West & Northern U.S.: 3–5 business days

Long-distance shipments, particularly to the western U.S., may experience additional transit time due to agricultural inspections in states such as Arizona, California, and Texas.

Extended transit times can be more challenging for small or tender plants and may require additional recovery care after arrival.
