We are not responsible for plants damaged on delivery trucks due to freezing temperatures

Orders that are shipped to the western US can often take 4 to 6 business days for transport, including the delay of agricultural inspections in Arizona, California & Texas. Please note that the quality of tender young plants is more affected by the extra length of stress inside shipping boxes. Extra care is taken during packaging to ensure quick recovery after unboxing.  Often plants need extra care for the first few weeks after transport.  Please review our policy on returns & refunds for more information, as well as our plant care guide.

Guava: Cattley/Strawberry Guava Tree (Psidium cattleyanum) - Live Plant

Ships in a 4 pot

Cattley Guava is one of the most outstanding edible hedges for Southern Florida as it is cold hardy to about 22º F. The strawberry cattley guava can also be grown as a large bushy shrub. It makes a very nice container plant, as they will bear heavily in a pot. Their little white flowers bloom in the spring giving petite aromatic fruits. Their attractive foliage and patterned bark are a plus.

A fairly slow-growing shrub or small tree, the cattley guava generally ranges from 6.5 to 14 ft tall. Both have slender, smooth, brown-barked stems and branches, and alternate, evergreen, obovate, dark, smooth, glossy, somewhat leathery leaves 1 1/3 to 4 3/4 in long and 5/8 to 2 1/3 in wide. The fragrant flowers, 5/8 to 2 1/3 inside are white with prominent stamens about 3/4 in long, and are borne singly or in 3's in the leaf axils. The fruit is round or obovoid, 1 to 1 1/2 in long, tipped with the protruding 4- to 5-parted calyx; thin-skinned, dark-red or purple-red. Red-skinned fruits have white flesh more or less reddish near the skin. The flesh is aromatic, about 1/8 in (3 mm) thick, surrounding the central juicy, somewhat translucent pulp filled with hard, flattened-triangular seeds 3/32 in. long.

  • Average mature height: 6-13 ft
  • Light: Full Sun
  • Soil: The cattley guava does well in limestone and poor soils that would barely support other fruit trees. It is shallow-rooted but the red type is fairly drought tolerant. The plant likes limestone and poor soils, but may produce more if grown on good soil and mulched. Fruit flies often attack the fruit. It tolerates a high water table, but may be killed by flooding.
  • Hardiness zones: 9a-11

Our Favorite Uses: Cattley guavas are eaten out-of-hand without preparation except the removal of the calyx. Guava can be eaten raw or cooked They are a perfect addition to smoothies, tropical fruit salads or pureed in marinades, dressings or sauces. In Hawaii, either half-ripe or full-ripe cattleys are cut in half, boiled, and the juice strained to make punch. Fruit should be stored at room temperature for up to 4 days or refrigerated up to 1 week

*Shipping Plants:
-Stress- Shipping can cause stress to a plant, mostly because it spends a few days in a dark stuffy box. Most plants survive with no problems or with a minimal stress (some leaf drop may occur), and recover quickly others may require extra love and attention with watering and gentle light after unboxing. Please refer to the Care Sheet inside your order- upon unboxing.
-Physical damage- Sometimes a carrier may damage boxes during handling or they are damaged due to weather, If this is the case please Contact UPS customer service right away to start an insurance claim and then email nursery@greendreamsfl.com with your claim number.
It does not happen often as we try to pack your plants with extra special attention but unfortunately there are some things beyond our control. In cases of serious damage, only the carrier can be responsible for it- so please contact the carrier within 30 days to start a claim. If it's just a broken branch or even part of a stem - just let it grow, take care of your plant and it will respond to your love. We understand your frustration if damage occurs, and strive to do everything we can on our end to minimize all damage and stress on the plant.
